And the final blow to journalism on TV3 comes to pass…

…Staff have taken personal grievances against the network, but the damage has been done. The killing off of Campbell Live for political reasons poisoned all the good will TV3 had built and the cancelling of 3D is just the final vandalism of journalism on that network.

MediaWorks were just nominated for the worst Transnational Corporation operating in NZ, here were the judges reasons…

“The grounds for nomination are political interference, by killing off the only current affairs show anywhere on TV that actually took seriously its mission to be the voice of the people and to hold the powerful to account. And considering that TV3 replaced John Campbell with Rightwing mouthpiece Paul Henry, another ground for nomination is running an ideological crusade. The enclosed New Zealand Herald’s article headline ‘Campbell’s Crusades Irked TV3 Bosses’ (23/5/15) puts it in a nutshell. The article says that TV3 management considered that the show ‘over-emphasised charitable fundraising, and coverage of the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake, GCSB spying and child poverty’ (as well as subjects like Pike River). There was plenty of evidence that not only did Campbell Live piss off TV management but also senior figures among the directors with close connections to the Government and the Prime Minister.

“To add insult to injury Campbell Live was, at first, replaced by yet another Australian police reality show, then by a cooking show. And MediaWorks has not stopped there in its relentless drive to kill off current affairs and any kind of serious news. More recently it has announced it is shutting down its newly created 3D current affairs show (which led to a fightback from its journalists). MediaWorks has moved in a heavy-handed fashion to extend the dumbing down of its programmes into the one remaining area (news and current affairs) that had previously stood in sharp contrast to the rest of the dismal crap produced by either major NZ network. It falls nicely into the playbook of capital’s inherent compulsion to provide a lowest common denominator market for advertisers”.

…the incompetence of management that has seen ratings plummet, has seen advertising fall and has seen a boycott was rewarded by another year long contract.

Teina Pora would still be inside prison if it wasn’t for 3d, its loss is just another nail in the coffin for our journalism industry and it weakens our democracy.

How on earth does ‘The Story’ or ‘Scout’ make up for this abomination.

  1. I bet even Pat Gower has his feelers out, desperately looking for that PR position in National Party HQ or the PM’s entourage, after all, he may as well make the current unspoken arrangement official.

  2. Its unbelievable that New Zealand trains journalists to a high degree. Only to have them move offshore.

We keep on losing all these high paying jobs, in all industries, it’s just journalism is in your face all the time. we’ve lost Campbell (3) Julian and Forbs (MTV) Pual Holmes (RIP) and no one replaced them.

My fear is this will only change in the event of a depression. Then we can fire every one and start again.

    • No, what happens in a depression is that the poor and middle classes are forced to sell off stuff at cheap rates, which is bought up by the very rich, thus creating greater inequality than before. I think that the very rich quite like the odd depression from time to time.

The MSM are there to divert our attention from critical thinking.

      • Honestly. What ever, and middle fingers to the middle class. If you can’t vote responsibly, you deserve the fruits of conservatives labour who have unwound all the automatic stabilisers that have prevented deep down turns since the Great Depression.

I’m being totally serious, we need a new class of middle income earners. They’ve got munchausens syndrome, and there’s no consuming your way out of it, you can’t borrow your way to prosperity. The only way to cure this type of mass insanity is if they all get turfed out on the streets.

  3. The trouble with TV3 is it has become irrelevant.

You cannot afford to dumb down a media outlet like free to air television in the internet world because once quality goes you’ve got nothing. Unfortunately for whatever stupid reasons Mediaworks management did just that!

  4. they were fools if they didnt see this coming, this was only a front so people would forget dumping jc then when the heat is off, axe this too, it was very tame, though had the impression of being hard hiting, hard hitting would be an investigation into the actualities of kdc case or keys pre political life, what did he do in ireland, thats what hes trying here, turn it into a country of the ultra elite and serfs.
watch some of vinnie eastwoods shows on key, maybe the worst ones are about what happened to hubard
the show that took over jc is for the axe too soon, even though i never have watched it, it serves mrs duplicitous right to be charged, even though thats not popular to say, it was not a loop hole as she left a trail that if any one else had have tried she would have got caught, her nad her co host are dupes, not sure if they know it yet, for keys program of not having informed citizens while he does his best to rape the nz with his globalist buddies

  5. Only ‘The Nation’ is left, and whilst I’ve criticised it in the past, it’s the better of the two weekend morning offerings (Q+A being the other).

The only reason ‘The Nation’ remains is that it’s funded by NZ On Air. Though with a National Party apparatchik placed on the NZ On Air Board – John Key’s Electorate Chairperson, Stephen McElrea* – it’s questionable how longer that will last.

Even with NZOnAir funding, Mediaworks (and TVNZ) have consigned both to the “ghetto” time slots of early Saturday and Sunday mornings. Not exactly a vote of confidence by either broadcaster.

The Neo-liberal experiment demands that we be Consumers, not Citizens. To achieve that, we must be disengaged from the political process and focused only on mindless consumerism. Prime-time current affairs programming is not conducive to that new paradigm.

TV in a Neo-liberal Nirvana looks like “Breakfast TV”. Dumbed down to a level that a 6 year old can giggle at.

TV3 is pretty much a lost cause except for aficionados of reality cooking/home improvement/talent-quest shows and crime porn, in it’s various incarnations.

More than ever, we need a new TVNZ7 (with John Campbell as CEO?) or Radio NZ/TV; free from political interference; and funding managed by a hands-off process such as the Remuneration Authority.
