Dear Mr Turnball,

I am an Iranian woman speaking on behalf of Fazel Chegeni because Fazel is dead and cannot speak for himself.

I am speaking for Fazel because my own Prime Minister, John Key, is too gutless to speak up against injustice.

Fazel who put his faith in your country’s respect for human rights will now be an immortal symbol of your country’s heartless neglect and appalling treatment of asylum seekers.

Fazel was persecuted and tortured in Iran, he travelled to the end of the earth for the bittersweet dream of freedom in exile.

He arrived at your doorstep with his heart filled with hopes of a life free of torment and suffering. What did he get?

You humiliated him and tortured his gentle soul by prolonged incarceration in detention centers that are repeatedly condemned, by human rights groups, for their poor conditions.

Fazel would not have ended up at the bottom of a cliff if he had experienced dignity and compassion that all refugees deserve.

The anguish that Fazel felt does not end with his death. You have condemned Fazel’s family to a lifetime of sorrow, torment and suffering.

You have broken the trust the world has in Australia’s commitment to human rights by ignoring the International Convention Against Torture and violating the rights of asylum seekers- including children.

Mr Turbull, it is time for you to hang your head in shame. The world is watching you and shaking their heads in disbelief. How many more deaths before your Government is prepared to act?

With sadness and disgust,

  1. Our hearts go out to all the Fazels out there. I recently visited Port Arthur, why does a country that has experienced the terror of “transportation”, the brutality of the “system” seek to recreate it for others? Both Mr Turnbull and Mr Key have it within their power to stop this today, immediately. That they don’t do so is a blot on their characters, and on the inhumanity of those who support this course. Shame!

  2. Donna, I agree but let us all stop trying to appeal to the higher consciousness of people who long ago lost their moral compass.

Immediate action can be taken by all aware and ethical consumers – don’t buy Australian produce or from Australian-owned companies, and don’t trade with the local branches of Australian franchises. And definitely and without pause switch to a locally owned bank if your account is still with an Australian bank.

Words aren’t going to sway the Turnbulls of this world; boycott, disinvestment and sanctions stand a much greater chance of prompting change. As there’s no chance of the Key, or, frankly, any other possible NZ government, implementing a BDS strategy against Australia, it is up to you and me and all other principled kiwis to use our dollars to send a message across the ditch.
