Hikoi for homes needs volunteers! This year CPAG with the support of AAAP, Unite and the First Union will be holding a Hikoi to demonstrate our support toward better housing for everyone.  And we need your help to make it a success!
This year we at CPAG with support of others are challenging a pressing issue that is affecting all New Zealanders.  The New Zealand housing crisis is not being dealt with sufficiently and it is simply not good enough that our most vulnerable are being forced to the edges of society. Housing is a basic human right and we as New Zealanders need to stand up for our right to adequate and affordable housing. Toddlers are dying in unfit homes, homelessness in Auckland city is exploding, state tenants are being evicted, emergency housing providers are full to capacity, private rents are skyrocketing and nothing of use is being done and no one is taking a stand.
The Hikoi for homes will be held on the 21st  of November from Glen Innes train station to Orakei Domain , roughly 2-3 hours.

There is a secondary start point from Coates Ave for those who cannot make the whole walk.(Also I can send through rough timing of the hikoi and volunteer start times  for those who want more details.)
The volunteering roles we need include;
1.      Marshalls/guides for along the route
2.      First aid experienced people
3.      Water hand outs
4.      People to help set up at the start, middle and end locations
5.      Anyone who would like to be an entertainer, play music along the way
6.      Banner making workshop
7.      Flyer hand out in your area (letter box hand out)
8.      Putting posters up in and around central Auckland
Please reply to this email if you are interested to volunteer along with your preferred role. If you are unable to come on the day but would still like to help out, email me at hikoi@cpag.org.nz and I can sort something.
Many thanks to those who have already expressed interest and apologies for double emailing
If you would like to know more about the Hikoi, or would like to help get the word out you can access the Facebook page or read up on the issue on www.hikoiforhomes.co.nz

  1. Would like to be involved in anything similar in Wellington.

    Have been thinking about a protest I want to do chalking political poetry and slogans around Parliament from Molesworth to The Terrace. I really care about this issue as I am suffering so much more due to unsafe unstable and unaffordable housing – private rental housing. I can’t get a state house, they sold them all in Wairarapa.

    This might be the time to do it, would be good if I could get others to help of course, its a long way. If there are lots of us we could chalkbomb all around the city. Also would be good to get some youtube footage if anybody interested in that?

  2. The meeting to organise the Christchurch event is at WEA at 7pm tonight, Thursday 29th. Minto and others are organising it.
