Over the last 18 years, WINZ have underpaid beneficiaries by one day every year. It’s a technical screw up on WINZ behalf and the Government have only just realised it…

Work and Income has underpaid some beneficiaries by a day for the last 18 years and the government is now trying to change the law and wipe the arrears.

Advocates say the government owes hundreds of thousands of people for one day’s benefit; leaving it with a bill which could stretch into the millions.

…now when beneficiaries owe WINZ money, WINZ go out of their way to destroy those beneficiaries lives. It’s interesting that WINZ has ripped off a day for the last 18 years and won’t be punished or forced to repay the money. So when people with low literacy face complex rules and regulations and fail those impenetrable rules, WINZ destroy them with massive fines and jail time, yet when WINZ, a Government Department with all the resources of NZ screws up and underpays Beneficiaries for 18 years – the Government just shrug and change the law for them?

If this was happening to middle class people, there would be outrage and a media campaign akin to that stupid bloody flag to demand WINZ pay those beneficiaries that money, but because it’s poor people, watch the Government bury it and media ignore it.

Maybe we’d get some Twitter activism if we made the reapplication form for beneficiaries a design issue and used fonts that Wellington doesn’t like?

If you are a beneficiary, here is the place you can download the form to apply for your money.

  1. Well if it was middle class or the ultra wealthy owed money by the government, not only would there be an outcry, but I’d say they would start up their own give a little campaign for donations to their plight!

However, it would never happen to the above mentioned, because most are NatzKEY supporters. And as we know, NatzKEY looks after its own kind very well!

As for the underpaid beneficiaries being paid back, I wouldn’t hold my breath! They don’t vote for NatzKEY, so are insignificant in the eyes of FJK and his mobsters! FJK’s popularity is unlikely to suffer as a result!

  2. It’s simple. The government legally owes the money – PAY IT BACK!

Disgusting to try to make a new law to make their actions legal.

Maybe we can forgo the Pandas so we can pay back to NZ’s most vunerable?

      • Key cares more about pandas than beneficiaries!!!! So there Stacey!!!! And my 8 exclamation marks out-trump you by two!! Four.

      • … and it should be “owes” not “owe”.

“Government” is a singular noun although it may apply to many people… 🙂

      • Another idiot that thinks the govt is some kind of benevolent santa clause, instead of a self serving collective of overpaid parasitic louses that are funded by taxes we all pay; their job being to manage OUR pot of money.

WINZ made me pay back a whole year because I took a loan out while on student allowance to buy a car, then a flight to start a job in London…..they said I had other income. Because I was unable to return to NZ to defend my case, the arrogant b%€×£ said I was “out of time” to be heard so owed $7,000. When I returned, I complained all the way to the Ombudsman and found the system was corrupt. I have been paying the fkers as little as possible ever since as the only protest. BTW, Key is a cnt but the snaggle tooth dyke was no better

      • WINZ is bound by law to pay the correct amount of benefit. Affected beneficiaries must be paid the amounts owing – plus interest.

        • Not quite: the Social Security Act 1964 provides, expressly, that restarted benefits are payable on the day and not the day after, as WINZ has done (illegally) for the past years. However, there is no statutory entitlement to interest on unpaid benefits, as the Act excludes other remedies. Finally, “the King can do no wrong” – under our feudal system of government, this doctrine means even the meanest civil servant (and there’s a lot of competition for the title) does not have to follow the law because they can always change it to suit their fancies. Quite why the rest of us obey the law is an interesting question: I suspect it’s because that nice Mr Key will get someone to shoot us if we don’t.

    • @ saveNZ – forgo pandas to pay NZ’s most vulnerable?

      Go wash your mouth out!

Pandas will be the next diversion for the masses, once the flag issue is done and dusted!

Key always needs a diversion of some sort to cover his squalid back room wheeling and dealing in an attempt to legitimize his filthy lies!

  3. Pity the Government did drop the flag rubbish and forget the pandas ,pay the beneficiares the money owed, and stop screwing with peoples lives.
Paula Bennet has gone over to the dark side, and shes sp proud of it ,well its nothing to be proud of,except shes proud to show MR Key she can be just like him,a smiling assasin

  4. Since I’m still waiting for my $1700 in 1987 dollars of sickness benefit that was very illegally underpaid (I’ll even graciously forgive them the interest) and which has even been admitted to by the then DSW, I’m not going to hold my breath on this one…

  5. What do you mean “will” decide?

Honestly Martyn, you keep putting up blogs using the future tense. Will Rachel Glaucoma blah-de-blah-de-blah? Will red peak etc etc.

    And now “will decide”.

We all know the decision has already been made. Look at what Trolley said when the story was originally made public. Only one day; a small amount each; a technical blunder; it’s a lot for the Government to fund etc etc. Basically getting us all ready for the big fat zilch.

As far as this shower go, “will” simply means “the time when we tell the public”.

I bet you $14 Martyn, they will NOT pay it back and that they have already “decided”… 🙂

    • There more chance of Key putting the NZ Flag into the referendum alongside Red Peak, than WINZ paying our any money.

  6. Beneficiaries get shafted day in and out, and this government is an expert in this. I dread what their decision will be, I can already guess it, as it was not budgeted for by Bill English and his little servant Bennett, and hence a middle finger salute will be what those on benefits can expect.

  7. Baycorp is sharing debt collecting with an American company.maybe its time to call them in to collect the debt Keys government owes beneficiaries.
