  1. Yes – very concise…often thought about that in the past.

However …the militaristic Rangatira were no strategic and tactical fools either…they realized – like the Japanese – that in order to foot it with a new culture they needed to take on board that new technology…

And for awhile they held the balance of power against the ‘ new ‘ people and also their traditional enemies…

It was an age where military might dictated policy…

However …we are in a new era…post the atom bomb.

Other more seductive and more surreptitious methods are employed now in geopolitical methods…

Therefore economic sanctions , embargoes and trade are used as the weapons of choice …and in this case…

Foreign speculation with a govt that actively encourages its people with low interest rates to reinvest that capital in property and tangible assets in order to bolster up its own internal deficits by converting that capital into tangible items and using other country’s assets and property…is a means by which we cannot hope to match and are causing a societal imbalance in our own country…

Which needs to be answered by the mechanisms and tools of this modern age…

We do not need a musket….what we need is a Foreign Owners Register.

And coupled with that … effective laws that prevent foreign ownership by people who elect to be purely speculative in their approach rather than out of any real long term goals of benefiting this society.

  2. If intended as parallel to current housing sales situation this cartoon only partially succeeds.

In respect to the parallel, leaving aside many issues surrounding colonisation, and I’m not intending to downplay them, most of the debate surrounding present situation is the sale to those who do not reside here and do not intend to reside here. Moreover the current fear is that non resident buyers are in it for pure speculation which is returned off shore and they no have interest in real investment here.

In comparison most buyers referred to in the cartoon probably put huge investment into their new homeland.
