I don’t watch TV3, but dear oh dear, Paul Henry has had a ‘mare of a meltdown…

Henry lashes out at wrong columnist
Paul Henry has harshly criticised the wrong columnist for a Herald on Sunday article that pointed out his show is rating lower than Sesame St on some days.

The notorious broadcaster lashed out, blaming NZ Herald media columnist John Drinnan, calling him “that man of evil words,” “stupid” and a “twat.” His co-host Hilary Barry chimed in, and said, “silly old John is interviewing his typewriter again.”

The article appeared on June 28 in gossip column Spy, without a by-line. Spy is written by Ricardo Simich and Pebbles Hooper (who has since resigned for other reasons).

Mr Drinnan does not write for the Herald on Sunday.

…now dear old Drinnan can get things wrong, he claimed this blog had a bias against the ALCP in one of his weirder columns, but he’s mostly well respected and regarded so to attack him falsely suggests poor Paul Henry is under a lot of stress.

He should be.

In killing off Campbell Live for political purposes, MediaWorks management have bet the entire network on The Paul Henry Show, it’s failure to rate despite the enormous promotion it’s received should be deeply depressing.

The problem is that while some people love Paul, as many hate him. Because the show is so one sided, people who loath him simply won’t tune in. The opportunity to build audience should be seen in who they put on the panel with him. The only time the show has been interesting is when Pam Corkery or Willie Jackson have been on. People who hate Henry will tune in if they think there’s a fight.

If the Paul Henry show remains a limp one sided affair, it won’t just be Henry who gets dumped, Weldon and Julie Christie will be for the chop too.

  1. Martyn’s final paragraph –

“If the Paul Henry show remains a limp one sided affair, it won’t just be Henry who gets dumped, Weldon and Julie Christie will be for the chop too.”

Like the sound of that one very much 🙂

    BRING BACK CAMPBELL LIVE!

    • Well Judy Bailey is standing in for Paul Henry this week ,maybe Judy is making a comeback, wouldnt it good if it was permanent and Henry got the push. welcome back Judy.

  2. The problem is that while some people love Paul, as many hate him.

Actually, that should be while some people love Paul the majority of people loath him.

    • Probably more accurate would be “many people hate Paul Henry and the majority loathe him with a passion”

      • If Hooray Henry spontaneously ignited, I wouldn’t cross the road to pee on him to put out the flames. Enough said.

  3. If Hooray Henry were to open his eyes he would see many failed Radio and TV jocks who have failed in the past, just as he will no doubt.

Sure as hell the shows advertisers will be aware of his ratings and will be asking questions of Media Works.
It is time for this jerk to ride off into the sunset.

  4. So the numero uno of NZ journalists can’t even be bothered to check his information before he delivers another ego-driven diatribe against anyone who steps on his shadow. The old fashioned term for such a person is a lazy bastard.

  5. Paul Henry only says stuff for whoever pays him…

A few weeks ago/last month he has a supposed ‘expert’ on to talk about the Rena (container ship that crashed against the reef) and its removal.

Now this supposed ‘expert’ was actually not an expert. He was quoting proper experts and had nothing to do with either process… This person was trying to tell the Maori people in the area that it would be best to leave the wreckage at the bottom of the ocean… And for the Maori people to take the money they are offering…

Now to salvage this ship, it would take years and millions and millions of dollars. Yet this company wants to offer the Maori people thousands as a way to remedy this problem…

Paul Henry totally agreed with this. Leading me to believe that he got this supposed expert who is probably getting a cut also.. to appear on his show to try and change the minds of all of the people… Of course it may be better to leave the wreckage there… But compensation should come in the form of millions not thousands as PH suggests… But if you pay PH enough he will say whatever the fuck you want him to.

    • Upton Sinclair
“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

  6. TV3 is broadcast digitally. In terms of Harmful Digital Communications, “that man of evil words,” “stupid” and a “twat” fit the Bill exactly.

He ought to be prosecuted because that kind of bullying vitriol is exactly what the Bill was designed to legislate against.

    • Roy you took the words out of my mouth,

How can it be that due to Govt digital gag orders as we are all shitting ourselves slagging off FJK as a ferking lair, this twat gets away like Slug Slater did saying toxic things about a dead West Coaster??

    • C’mon guys, that bill is designed to deal with the internet specifically. And what of freedom of expression? You people are doing us lefties all an extreme disservice by asserting such things, and thumbing up such comments.

      Shame on you lot.

      • And what of freedom of expression?

Is “freedom of expression” a license to on-line bullying, harrassment, character assassination, and other unsavoury activities?

If we wouldn’t allow that in our newspapers and magazines, why is it acceptable in cyber-space?

Just a few thoughts to ponder.

  7. We haven’t tuned in to TV3 for months .
Load of absolute drivel – hard to work out who their demographic is …. meth-heads maybe ?

    • Never tuned into it since it started…..the five minutes that are on the radio as I take my son to the train station of a morning is more than enough to remind my why the television doesn’t get changed to that channel.

  8. Who is Paul Henry? Is he the one that won a race horse and got some money and drank it away, or is it to do with some irritating noise I heard on the radio this morning, scrolling down the frequency scale on FM, who was laughing like an idiot about nothing, or about himself, but had nothing else to be proud of?

    • Paul Henry is a failed wannabe National MP. He was beaten for the Wairarapa electorate by a transsexual Labour candidate, Georgina Beyer in 1999. That is why he hates everyone who has even a hint of deviation from his perceived norms of sexuality. He is a spoilt little baby who is still spitting the dummy about it sixteen years later.

  9. The NZ viewing audience isn’t ready for Paul Henry – yet. Despite being dumbed down by endless “reality” tv crap, it’ll be another five years before the collective IQ drops another ten points and we’ll then be seeing Henry as a broadcaster of “extraordinary talent”.

By then, Sesame Street will be dumped as being “too intellectual” for the average viewer.

2020 – put it in your diary.

    • Ha! The only thing I query re your comment is I don’t think it is possible to dumb down any further is it?

  10. I am sure there are many mature, funny, honest, easy on the eye, intelligent people out there who can do a much much better job of it than giggling gurty P Henry.
Put your cv into tv3 no doubt they will be hiring shortly just in case.

He has alot in common with that jourNOlist who also thinks alot of himself.
Often using offensive, disturbing, melodramatic, exaggerated, shocking, disgusting, language they think is funny and necessary.
    Epic fail In My Opinion.

  11. TV3 is on a roll ! ! Folks are dropping them and for good reasons.
Paul Henry has been a gross national embarrassment and we are laughed at for having someone of his low life character representing us in any way.
How Hilary Barry can stand it, frankly blows us away. She is honest and has class and good on her for being real and expressing her sadness over the demise of Campbell Live. She is human and not sure how she can hang around the likes of Paul Henry for more that a few minutes.
I’d get bored before that ! He disgusts me on so many levels. I would rather stick a spike in my eye before watching Paul Henry and Jono & Ben.

Gosh, we deserve so much better in our media / journalist world. I
am just hoping that there will be some new and younger journos
coming of age that can replace these few rude; boring idiots we have now like Paul Henry on his righteous / judgmental pedestal.
Isn’t it pasture time Paul ? Wake up Channel Three – Jono and Ben are about as boring as it gets. A two by four is more entertaining.

    • While I agree people are turning away from TV3 in their thousands, they seem to be propping up the savour of TV1 ‘Mike (everything is wonderful, may john key reign forever) Hosking’

Is it a case of winning the battle, losing the war?

  12. i think most people are looking at this in the wrong context,Its media works who have got it wrong ,they have committed the journalistic act of suicide by showing they are a puppet of the government, who can take anything they say now as independent news,im afraid they; not so mush PHenry are the problem here.Any one of integrity is automatically tarred with the same brush by assigning with a government run media outlet, because that is basically what TV3 and its stuff have become..

    • Hello sailorbill….Mediaworks IS the radio/tv arm of a media propaganda tranche of the Nat Party, designed to tell people “what they need to know” and “what they DON’T need to know” in the lead-up to the 2017 election.

Rupert Murdick once said: “I challenge anybody to show me an example of bias in Fox News Channel.” — (Salon, 3/1/01). Stephen Joyce may one day say “I challenge anybody to show me an example of bias in the Mediaworks stable.” — (Winnie, 11/07.15).

They (the Natzies) have an extreme right “Truth-style” Slater/Whaleoil and Rachel Glucima. Pebbles Hooper spouted “whaleist” shite and had to fall on her sword. They (the Natzies) capture the muddle NZ with Hooray Henry and Hooray Hoskings. They have a presence in the left of centre with Hooton, Boag, Pagani, Plunkett and Wilie Jackson (even though he calls the Nats “tories”). Nanny Herald is overtly a right-wing newspaper, cloaked with newspaper veneer of unbiasedness, but claiming that “Eastasia has always been at war with Eurasia” and that “the Labour Party has always been corrupt”.

While we are on the subject of New Zealand becoming the 53rd star on the US Flag, “In recent years, the American media has been plagued with all sorts of problems including, sliding profits, scandals about manipulation, plagiarism, propaganda, lower audiences, “dumbing down”, and so on”

Has a familiar ring about it huh?

  13. I quite liked Henry on TVNZ. His evening show on TV3 got a bit tedious after a while, because it was mostly about him, and was extremely partisan. Tragic loss of Campbell Live, especially considering it was lost favour of the most irritating drivel I have ever witnessed on 3 in the morning: little in the way of any news, just more of Henry being big headed. It has put me right off the guy, I’m afraid. The adage “give him enough rope” seems appropriate in this case. He’s been hung out so long now, it is starting to stink. I’ve given up on morning news completely now. In fact, I’ve given up on the news almost completely – “Newsworthy”, “Seven-sharp” are drivel. On the 6 news, we have to sit through presenters with verbal diarrhea talking about gadgets, US movies, celebrities & music, where nearly 50% of content is about sport; we sit through it in the hope of catching a few minutes of content from the BBC or a US broadcaster, with some local news thrown in. It is not my idea of “news”. I watch the news to find out the news, not for entertainment. If a presenter does talk, they need to be inquisitive and critical – investigative journalism is now dead in NZ. I am sure there are political reasons for this, and that stinks more than that fool left out hanging every weekday morning on 3.
