Who’s the real threat to security: Govt climate policy – or four climbers?

Coal Action Network Aotearoa today congratulated the Greenpeace climbers on the roof of Parliament drawing attention to the lack of Government action on climate change.

“Who is the bigger threat to security here: John Key’s apparent intention of letting global temperatures rise by 4degC by taking virtually no action – or four peaceful activists and a few solar panels on a roof?” asked Jeanette Fitzsimons of CANA.

The Greenpeace action comes on the back of a Dutch Court yesterday ordering its Government to increase its 2020 emissions reduction target of 17% to at least 25%. New Zealand’s target is 5 percent.

“The Dutch Government’s 2020 target was already better than New Zealand’s – yet the court ordered it to increase that target in order to ‘protect its citizens’. The world is moving to tackle climate change, yet New Zealand seems intent on doing as little as possible,” said Cindy Baxter, of CANA.

  1. It wouldn’t matter if every one on the planet turned into Jeanette Fitzsimons tonight,
The planet is locked into PLUS 4C no matter what idiot humans attempt.
With all the CH4 and carbon sitting just below the melt line that several hundred years @ 350ppm CO2 would melt (@ 400 ppm it is happening at light speed)
We have done in something like 30 years what at the time of the great dying took 10,000 years, which is bring CO2 up to 400 ppm.
Over those past 10,000 years there was roughly an average of .7ppm CH4, with an average life span of about 12 years (as CH4)
So we still have something like 500 ish ppm CH4 still to fill the atmosphere to catch up to the current CO2 content?
Shell Oil/IEA are saying we are locked into +4C
Royal Dutch Shell has been accused of pursuing a strategy that would lead to potentially catastrophic climate change after an internal document acknowledged a global temperature rise of 4C, twice the level considered safe for the planet.
“Instead, the New Lens Scenarios document refers to a forecast by the independent International Energy Agency (IEA) that points to a temperature rise of up to 4C in the short term, rising later to 6C ”

Didn’t Fitzsimons vote for continued growth of this system? via Kiwi Saver??
The only way a kiwi savers investments are going to grow is if the planet keeps bleeding.

  2. 350 and 1 deg C was the limit. Beyond that the gambling odds sky-rocket well of control and human understanding.

Most politicians lie habitually and business is controlled by the money men parasites who are the heart beat of the destruction.

They all drive the nihilism of grab now or someone else will. Blind dogs eating each other and devouring our chances of using collective intelligence and cooperative community good to support the planet and future life, as we know it.

Our “economy” is an illusion based on denial, false promises, exponential rates of extraction by the profiting few and ultimately the demise of that economy.

It is a neurotic spasm of blind greed for some, and bull shit for the rest yet, we accept it.

Our fate is pretty much sealed and if there are any survivors they will never live like we have during the last 100 years.

6 deg C is not a limit but a progress payment.

Our mortgage was made clear 42 years ago and nothing effective has been done deal with it.

Four climbers on the house of cards, It should have been 40 thousand, 4000 thousand and billions across the globe.

These meagre four now need support that shows the mealy mouthed speaker that he should regret his condemnation of their heroic action.

The four have taken action necessary because we have a stupid apathetic public who swallow the BS spouted by puppet Key and his transnational blood suckers.

Shame and public retribution on those who criticise then or their cause.

  3. Globally coal is the number 1 cause of climate change.

James Hansen formerly a director at NASA has said, that if we can’t get rid of coal it is all over for the climate.

    From Wikipedia

Hansen has been particularly critical of the coal industry, stating that coal contributes the largest percentage of anthropogenic carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.[70]
He has called for phasing out coal power completely by the year 2030.[71]

During his testimony before the Iowa Utilities Board in 2007, Hansen likened coal trains to “death trains” and asserted that these would be “no less gruesome than if they were boxcars headed to crematoria, loaded with uncountable irreplaceable species.”[72]

Hansen has determined that burning of fossil fuels is changing our climate and that the Earth is in “imminent peril”.
Millions of species, and humanity itself, are threatened.
Hansen’s book ‘Storms of My Grandchildren’, predicts increasingly ferocious and stormy weather events will blight the world his grandchildren will inherit if we keep burning fossil fuels at the current rate.
Relevant to the Greenpeace protest at parliament and in particular the depiction of John Key as turning his back on jobs and the climate.

Like Greenpeace Hansen’s evaluation, is that the response of politicians to climate change has mainly been “greenwashing”, where their proposals sound good but amount to little.

The environmental disasters predicted by Hansen, we are now just beginning to experience. Hansen and other scientists say that humanity need to cut back fossil fuel carbon dioxide emissions until the atmospheric concentration of CO2 is stabilitzied at 350 ppm or
    less.

Glaciologist Eric Rignot of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of California, Irvine, narrates this animation depicting the processes leading to the decline of six rapidly melting glaciers in West Antarctica. A new study by Rignot and others finds the rapidly melting section of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet appears to be in an irreversible state of decline, with nothing to stop the glaciers in this area from melting into the sea.
