Is it time to boycott TV3 and what is next for public interest broadcasting in NZ now Campbell Live has been killed off?

The horror of our entire mainstream media landscape being dominated by right wing fanatics like Hosking and Henry means the time is now for all the tribes of the Left to consider putting aside their innate hostility for one another and seriously consider working together online in the interests of genuine public broadcasting.

In terms of TV3 – they have betrayed us, I see no reason to support them and a momentum to boycott TV3 is growing. Some will claim TV3 are simply making a commercial decision and if Campbell wasn’t rating that’s the reality. This is nonsense because it avoids the fact that Campbell Live has been out rating everything else recently and it ignores the fact that MediaWorks have benefitted from sweetheart deals so much so that they have an obligation to us as citizens more than they do to their shareholders.

There is already much chatter and talk amongst some that we need to have John Campbell on an online format, that we have the reach and skill sets to create a new progressive media and movement.

Killing off the last prime time bastion of serious debate means only Native Affairs and Maori TV are left. If we want to rectify that it will require unity and genuine co-operation.

There have been numerous attempts at this with Bernard Hickey, Scoop, Public Address, On The Left, but each have not gathered the popular support necessary to be a genuine challenger to the mainstream. With Campbell Live shut down, the time is now necessary  to accept that the mainstream media have walked away from their Fourth Estate obligations and our democracy is weaker for it. If citizens are merely fed right wing tripe as news, they vote accordingly.

If Campbell Live being killed off for political and corporate interests isn’t the catalyst for a new progressive media project, nothing will.

  1. Yep Martyn, – I have switched off Corporate TV3 poison for the future, – until they return to a critical free speech network again which may take some time.

I saw The CEO of TV3 crying a river as he said pathetically (with a thin smile) “we really wanted John to stay”????

What a bought cheap corrupted creep he is .

He has undermined our whole NZ fragile failing democracy and inched us nearer to anarchy, because according to the celebrated Texas authority on democracy Professor David Lesch a noted Professor of Arab affairs & democracy said on RT “worlds apart” today; “that without a free speech forth estate democracy will fail”.

He noted that is what is causing the fall of Assad, as is happening in Syria today, as ISIS advance on his house of Assad in Damascus is about about to fall this week, so is this what these asshole free speech silencers want here in NZ to?

Planet Key is a repressive anti democracy regime make no mistake.

  2. “what is next for public interest broadcasting in NZ now Campbell Live has been killed off?”

URGENT PUBLIC REQUEST FOR ALL OPPOSITION PARTIES.

    For the 20th time a say;

    In the light of the naked aggression shown over the last six years and now the political interference of the closing down of ALL our political current affairs programing and current political suppression of our free speech, even now occurring on our taxpayer owned public networks of TV1/Radio/NZ;

We the people now request that in our public interest please have ALL OPPOSITION PARTIES put their self interests aside and join in a grand coalition and meet in a public forum to plan to place a court order to seize back control of your half of our public broadcasting public funded networks back under your collective control to operate again a free speech media for the public good and for the saving of our democracy.

lastly we also request opposition force the withdrawal of any public funding of the TV3 network and Media works funding as the public refuse to fund a biased anti free speech media network.

  3. +100 for the POST….sounds very exciting to have an alternative New Zealand online televised media with John Campbell

….despite how very good and popular his ‘Campbell Live’ programme was ….I am sure he was constrained in what he could investigate

…I think online television is the way of the future…just look at the success of RT…and we need something similar in New Zealand on New Zealand issues

…personally after ‘Campbell Live’ finishes ..(.I think tonight?)….I wont be going near TV3 again….and I will happily boycott any of their advertisers for the new programme…if they are listed here

  4. Yes I am sure media works is trembling in their boots now that Bomber Bradbury is calling for a boycott. Try to turn a negative into a positive and instead of a boycott turn it into a promotional opportunity, the call should be for a new TV show that investigates current affairs hosted by Wallace Chapman.

  5. TV3 has been my six oclock news watch for more years than i can remember based singularly on the fact that it lead into ‘Campbell Live’,

That has now changed, TV1 news will now attract my eyes,(and when whats-his face comes on at seven i will either hit the Off on the remote or default to the Simpsons,

i watched a bit of what followed TV1 news last night, gladly absent was whats-his-face and ki runga rongomatua nga,(thumbs up), to the kids of Minginui who got a bit of utu with a follow up from the program after a previous bout of the usual abuse had been pointed their way by whats-his-face the absent presenter,

Read out live on the program was the heading of a letter written by one of the kids to the show after the previous round of abuse,

To ”The Fascist with the bad hair” it said, i larfed, and then, i larfed a lot more…

  6. I think it is quite feasible to create a sustainable alternative media – just think about this. Most radio stations are staffed by about five people and most of these are advertising reps. To create a viable alternative, the core staff have to be paid, and paid reasonably well. That ensures they can continue. You need a centralised office that has the manager, programme manager (or managers if you are going multi-media), designers who do the layout etc, and a staff of advertising reps. News can be supplied by people already writing stories for their own publications, for free at first, and maybe the core suppliers being paid as freelancers when that is affordable.

Importantly, the news should not just be political and it should be refreshed on a hourly basis, if their is a internet radio presence. Fresh news across a broad range of topics is essential. I was saying to a friend who was toying with the idea of creating a commercial radio station that the essential thing he would need was to employ a journalist to put fresh news out on the hour, every hour. That attracts listeners and therefore advertisers.

  7. Grasshoppers ,

The technically correct academic term for when powerful elites control both the government and the media is not socialism or capitalism , its fascism .

America is already defined as a fascist country by leading academics and we are not far behind.

Campbell was the last bastion of NZ journalist integrity with prime time leverage .He produced actual Reality TV , which informed and improved the well being of thousands of our citizens on a daily basis for over a decade ,and many thousands of not so sleepy hobbits are really pissed off.

Despite being the highest rating show TV 3 had ,Campbell is axed not for commerical reasons but for political reasons.

Factor the new directors are personal friends of John Key , Stephen Joyce bailed out TV3 for some 40,000,000, and I’m lead to believe Media Works are owned by a subsidiary of Goldman Sacs and it all starts to make sense.”Get rid of this guy ”

We are now about to enter the NZ Media Dark Ages with a panza division of right wing Paul Henry clones ,Seven Blunt air head giggle boxes and lashings of infantile ” reality ” froth.

The Right, now effectively controls MSM .

The need for an effective Alternative Media Network (AMN) is now critical.

  8. The so-called fourth estate has given up and effectively merged with the first estate (the have’s) to become indistinguishable from them. Time for a fifth estate – the real press, the press the way it used to be: to challenge the status quo, criticize the government, hold the government to account and ask the question “why”. Not to let vested corporate interests control the flow of information and treat viewers and readers like morons.
The fourth estate has given up, on with the fifth estate!

  9. Martyn

lets start a global fund drive for an independent network including you and john Campbell, Frank, Myles, and all Journalists to come out of the closet since TV7 closed down?

TV7 really was the only real journalistic channel we ever had?

    How about it mate?

  10. Not saying its from the horses mouth or anything, but some advertisers on TV 3 did not like the zero hours story ran by C Live and threw their weight around. Yep, controlled by corporates.
Answer for the people of NZ: Give up on Television, ignore commercialism, read a good book, play a board game or two with the family, go online and look for alternative news and entertainment…anything, but don’t let the corporate bullies win.
Hit them where it hurts – the pocket.
One person doing the above wont make a difference, half the country doing it will!

  11. I have just signed up for the TVNZ GreenRoom, pitched as an “online community” where we, the audience, will be able to have some input into TVNZ content. We’ll see how meaningful this turns out to be, but I encourage others with a bit of time on their hands to sign up too, and make some noise in favour of public interest broadcasting on TVNZ channels:
    http://tvnzgreenroom.co.nz/

    • Sorry Dan I think you are hoping to highly that TVNZ will listen when they also are controlled by the same Corporations as TV3 are controlled through Steven Joyce and his band of propagandists.

Its a game of moving goalposts every time we get them in a corner they move the deck chairs.

try complaints process to TVNZ and you see what happens.

I did when the pre election interviews with Cunliffe was going on with Linda Clark and she over talked Cunliffe without giving him a right of reply and their response to our complaint?

They said they did nothing wrong at all.

We are best to have all opposition parties to get together and place a court injunction to take over half of TVNZ/RadioNZ to tell the other side of the story to give the taxpayer a choice of views not just the NatZ/Corporate view.
