…we can’t be sure of how many African-Americans are shot by the US Police, because as conveniently as not recording civilian deaths in the wars America likes to start, no agency in America collates such data. What is clear however is that if you are not white, the chance of the Police shooting first and not asking any questions are incredibly high…

The latest murder of an unarmed African-American shot in the back running from Police is just the latest in a series of cops killing on tape. Apologists for the Police will make the usual comments that this racist abuse is just isolated and not a systemic problem.

We should ignore those voices.

When we empower one group within society with powers that have almost zero counter checks and balances, we create a group who see themselves above the law. In NZ we have an authority worship culture that thinks the NZ Police can do no wrong. The Sleepy Hobbits of muddle Nu Zilind consider questioning the Police as akin to being Nicky Hager’s love child, so whenever the Police do wrong, it’s simply not accepted as the case.

We have numerous recent examples of an out of touch Police force drunk on extra surveillance powers who seem to be accountable to no one. Whenever Police cheerleader Greg O’Connor gets a chance to speak on any issue, he’s constantly pushing for Police to be armed with guns. Seeing as we can’t trust the cops with rape prosecutions, tasers, people held within custody, police chases or extra surveillance powers – why the hell would arming them result in anything else other than a jump in civilian deaths?

We need a mature discussion amongst citizens about the powers this Government have handed our Police and we need to ensure an indecent body can investigate the Police and provide more than toothless recommendations.

For that to happen, NZ needs to drop this juvenile believe everything the cops tell them approach to policing.

    It conjures up thoughts of a Police state finally.

    “Armed and dangerous” is what they will be as they are only human and make errors of judgement as we do.

    It will just be pushing us closer to anarchy if police are armed.

    Simply Canada doesn’t so why should we if we are unarmed?

  2. agree they should NOT be armed…except in an armed defenders situation

    ….arming the police will cause more fatalities and criminals will arm themselves and the general public…we will ALL be less safe in a macho fascist culture!

    …we do NOT want to go the way of the USA….shoot first talk later…when it should be should be talk first to defuse situations

  3. Agree with Martyn’s blog. NO GUNS FOR NZ POLICE.

    And now I wonder if it hadn’t been for the ordinary citizen’s filming of the horrific event, what the outcome would have been? Eight bullets for God’s sake! Without such indisputable evidence, I very much doubt the cop would have been charged with murder!

    Have heard the person responsible for the recording has gone into hiding for their own safety! And who can blame him/her? This is South Carolina after all, good ole boys red neck territory! Just had to see the mayor of the town speaking out, protecting ‘his’ police force, to realize this fact!

    Recent shootings of African Americans by white police officers, is becoming far too prevalent in the US! Uncomfortably reminiscent of the US’s (not so distant) dark past, which I vividly remember!

  4. Totally wrong what that now ex-police officer did to that unarmed African American that was murdered nothing less. And agree that if someone never recorded that incident it would have been just another shooting and framed in a way that would of favored the murderer. I hope justice in this case is served cause you have to remember that police over there have gotten off charges like this in the past even when it’s been recorded and the worse thing about it is that the lawyer acting for the police have blamed the victim for their own death so watch this space? And yes agree never arm our police force Greg O Connor is a thug and should not be trusted with his snake like comments.
