The Rights defence of spying for a mates job interview

The Right are defending the spying for a mates job interview with the  ‘but it’s legal’ arguement.

This is more horrific because Key changed the law to make it legal and he changed the law with the barest majority under urgency against the voices of a cross sector of NZ society.

The law change for the GCSB allows for…

The objective of the Bureau, in performing its functions, is to contribute to—
(a) the national security of New Zealand; and
(b) the international relations and well-being of New Zealand; and
(c) the economic well-being of New Zealand.

One of the main arguments against this expansion of the Spy Agencies was that the inclusion of the economic well-being of NZ meant the State was using military grade 5 Eyes spying capabilities to further economic interests which have been opened for corporate interests.

What it also does is set a terrifyingly low threshold for the State to activate these powers. NZers have been spooked into agreeing to these powers because they were aimed at the scary Muslim terrorists and the awful gangs, but economic well-being could be twisted into any justification.

  • A protest group will stop a coal ship leaving, that risks economic well-being as defined by us. Spy on them.
  • A politician threatening to not sign the TPPA, that risks economic well-being as defined by us.  Spy on them.
  • A movement is generating public support for unions, that risks economic well-being as defined by us. Spy on them.

With warrantless 24 hour SIS spying, the spy agencies have all the power, barely any oversight and any excuse to abuse that power.

This is why it’s difficult not to throw up a little in your throat when Key defends these abuses of power as legal. I’m not sure what I detest most; Key’s vacant aspiration, his utterly undeserved perpetual self satisfaction or the undiluted sophistry.

  1. How do you cope with inconvenient laws and conventions when you are PM John Key? You have a few options; 1, you change them (preferably getting your junior coalition partners to do it so you can avoid the flak); 2. You pretend to adhere to them publicly whilst subverting them in reality; 3. You deny that they exist (and if they don’t exist then you don’t have to take any notice of them, do you?); 3. You accuse others of breaking the same ones that you yourself ignore so that your MSM buddies will go after them instead of you; 4. you declare that they are stupid and meaningless therefore you are under no obligation to adhere to them: 5. You declare that breaking them is actually not illegal because you are “taking action to safeguard the rights of New Zealanders” and that makes it all OK.
    Perhaps one day New Zealanders will start to tire of the endless stream of weasel words that come from a man who purports to be our country’s leader, but is a total embarrassment to all but the most rabid Nationalphiles.

  2. For years people like John Armstrong have mentioned John Key’s legacy. Of course he who spends his time wondering about his legacy is not spend ing time creating a worthwhile legacy.

    Having said that a clear legacy of John Key is his propensity to defend the indefensible and to simply lie at other times.

  3. I think the time has come for NZ to pull out of the 5eyes relationship. The dominant partner is hopelessly duplicitous and a danger to the peace loving world. Need evidence . Here it is.

    A BBC reporter telling how “Building Seven” had collapsed five minutes before it collapses and with “Building Seven” in the background during her interview.
    We need to escape our dependance on the USA as their leaders are a pack of corrupt lying parasites. The last thing NZ needs is a binding trade agreement that enables them to rape and pillage us legally. Given that John Key is their handpicked NZ agent I don’t have much hope however. Vote Winston Northland. At least that will slow them down until the unfolding geopolitical drama renders them even more friendless and exposes their aggressive bullying to the world.

    • IKE;

      Brilliant.
      I wondered what happened to him.

      Does that mean others could do the same with precedent set?
      Imagine paying for dis-information and outright propaganda!

      Cheers.

  4. Yeah well…..remember Ian Fletcher?

    And when asked if he knew Fletcher personally before the short list of becoming the director of the GSCB , Key said he didn’t know him personally.

    However…it came out that 3 or 4 days before the short list was finalized….both Key and Fletcher had breakfast together….I guess the breakfast conversation was all about how the bacon and eggs were cooked so delightfully…

    But what was truly hilarious was when it came out that they were both childhood friends and knew each other well.

    So Key lying to the public and abusing our intelligence agencies is nothing new…

    Remember when he was cornered by The Moment of Truth and commanded the SIS to pull out classified documents to support his lies?

    Even against the protestations of the SIS that it would compromise our National security. And even then ….the documents he commanded the SIS to retrieve were totally irrelevant and out of context to the issues at hand.

    This is the sort of character we’re dealing with.

    Essentially …..a liar.

    • Yet your comment received thumb down(s). You are speaking the truth and yet someone here dislikes the sound of the truth. National are very adept at playing the haves against the have not(s), obfuscation (obscuration), deflection, distraction, etc. They regularly appeal to the more base (evil) instincts in man such as greed, and they play/prey on peoples insecurities (or need for security/comfort/ . .materialism).

      Seems the whole world is just waiting for the end. . . Well. Everyone that is not caught up in mundane distractions. How people cant see what is staring them in the face, its quite hopeless. Depressing.

      🙁

      • 333;
        Most don’t know. Perhaps we can educate them.

        WILD KATIPO;
        Thanks for reminding us. Most seem to forget so quickly.

        And ‘essentially….a liar.’ He’s far worse than that.

        Cheers.

    • Yes …accusations leveled at Mr Hager about ‘ timing’……well if that’s the case…seems awful suspicious that certain things like cricket matches and 1080 scares seem to come along just nicely for the Natz…..

      Either they have the luck of the Irish…or its just business as usual for them.

      Another lie , another day at the office.

  5. Forget about warrants,these guys are all acting above the law.Martyn;
    ATTENTION
    TO:- MARTYN,ALL JOURNALISTS AND NEW ZEALAND.

    Interview; with former Director of the Technical Division of NSA.

    This man has an IQ of 143. His job was to design software programs
    to spy on our ‘so called enemies’ such as Iran,Russia and China etc.

    When he saw that it was then being swung around to spy on all our populations worldwide his conscience would not let himself to participate any further.

    He became the original whistleblower.

    These are our true hero’s. It’s a wonder he is not dead.

    It blows lid off the myth that,”Oh,we are just saving mega data.”
    Snowden’s documents are validated.

    All content is being saved and Key surely would know this and perhaps why his lifelong buddy has resigned.
    It is mainstream, already.

    If you are pressed for time,make sure you watch the first 20mins and the last 10mins.
    We are mentioned in the first 3mins and all the programs in middle.
