There are worse things than Auckland Council’s overseas postings

I am always disappointed by what Aucklanders seem to think are issues worth getting upset over.

I have extreme difficulty getting pissed off about this…

It’s a ‘major scandal’: Local politicians criticise Auckland Council’s overseas postings

…when as a City we have far larger problems when it comes to Auckland Council.

Sure 2 maybe 3 people have a cushy gig in an overseas city to drum up tourism, and yes the costs are eye watering, but for a real example of a supposed ‘Council Controlled Organisation’ gone mad, look no further than the attempt to kill off any Council oversight altogether on the Board of Auckland Transport…

Plan to dump councillors from Auckland Transport board
Auckland bureaucrats have come up with a plan to dump councillors from sitting on the board of Auckland Transport and weakening the political process of appointing board members to council-controlled organisations (CCOs).

…this matters for 3 reasons.

1 – Auckland Transport has hundreds of millions of Aucklanders assets.
2 – 181 of their management team are paid salaries in excess of $100 000!
3 – And most disturbingly, Auckland Transport are about to get a face recognition camera system that will have live links through to the NSA!

Cushy jobs for 3 people overseas is newsworthy, Auckland Transport that manages hundreds of millions in assets, pays 181 of their staff over $100 000 and now has mass surveillance capabilities trying to kill off any democratic oversight is beyond news worthy, it should be a national scandal.

We get so angry in this country about the perception of someone getting more than us, yet are utterly indifferent to private interests taking over public assets and eroding our civil liberties.

      • Brown is a seriously flawed, tragic personality, especially for those close to him and should not run again. But it’s not about him.

These pathetic, trivial, nothing, annoying issues, which cost less than one Auckland Council CCO’s CEO’s salary, could be vaguely argued to help Auckland’s tourism sector. But that not what it’s about. Ironically they are a drop in the ocean compared to, say, the rotten, dodgy, secretive, who knows who is making money, SkyCity convention centre deal to name but one of our current governments massively questionable activities.

This is about getting Brown out and a government patsy in as mayor, end of story.

With a National mayor and its media connections this crap would be seen as a good news story or not news at all, just swept under the rug along with everything else!

  1. If what you say is factual then your concerns with respect to Auckland Transport are very important however this does not lessen the serious problems with the Auckland Council which go far beyond a few overseas postings.
One only has to look at the ballooning headcount and associated costs to recognise that the current Auckland Super City elected and appointed officials are destroying any benefits from the amalgamation. Rather than being an exercise in cost rationalisation and efficiency it has turned into a case book study in bureaucratic empire building.
Extremely disappointing Mr Brown you most certainly have lost my vote.

  2. Lets put this in bullshit in perspective. This latest big push by the Herald is pure Dirty Politics – Mark II! After the Mike Hosking’s “time for a change”, as in our mayor, opinion piece, that was the usual party political message from his buddy’s in the National Party there was a couple of other real obvious ham-fisted pieces denigrating Len Brown. Obvious as dogs balls it was a smear campaign. Cos Len is fucking up our asset thefts, he’s not the smiley rubber stamp Johnny we wanted in as mayor to give our asset plunder some veneer of legitimacy! (Read Tony Holman’s ” Beware that cloak and dagger council”, “A proposal to sell off $650 million of public assets has been snuck past Aucklanders” NZ Herald 17/02/15).

So now there’s been a tactical rethink, a sneaky “pretend we care” campaign where Len Brown is almost blamed for everything from climate change to the middle east and of course anything that happens in the council. He’s the suspicious looking man on the grassy knoll!

Never mind the fact that Key and National designed AC to be run by businessmen for business or more to the point National Party connected interests, without democratic input from ratepayers, namely so they could get their hands on the untapped assets that AC had. Never mind that this legislation ensures Brown and his entire council colleagues are about as pointless as the Governor-General and have no ability to do anything about anything.

So just to let you know National, the latest smear campaign against Brown is as obvious as the above mentioned dogs balls of the previous campaign!

  3. Why do you think Key put up Palino for Mayor after Wewege ran the sleeze about Lens affair with Bevan Chang to topple him so that Palino could get the job. US man with a creep like Wewege behind him. It wouldhave been a walk over for Key to raid Auckland of its loot, now the super city increases the take.Aucklanders wer’nt stupid they saw the American and Italian American for what they were, that’s why Brown is still mayor, but the knives are out its almost election time .

We need an uncorruptable person to be mayor ,maybe we should look in cloud cookoo land before Key finds another US ring in, or people like John Banks or Mike Hoskin they will help Key to the goodies if there is any left, now the next scam is to amalgamate all the areas into super cities ,they are easier to strip and control that way.
Has anyone noticed the MPS are more prosperous now than their salary permits, all expensively dressed , all arrogant.
Follow the money, and realise National can use the spy agency to get the dirt on anyone and use it against them ,that’s why they all tow the line.
People with normal assets like a few houses and money in the bank, need to keep a watchful eye, any money around the us corps and banks want it all, everything is not enough.
CEOs have taken over Auck council the mayor is superfluous now, its to be wondered whos idea that was ,?did Aucklanders have any say in it or was it slipped under the radar.

  4. There is nothing right about a London posting for the homesick spouse of an Auckland City employee – nothing. Cue subjective morality “Yes – this is bad, but I believe this is worse”. Bad is bad and ACC to whom I pay a fortune in rates needs to take it’s head out of it’s proverbial and start delivering better value for our dollar. I’m over this city being more expensive than New York to buy a house and having a petulant and worse than useless mayor whose fiscal credentials are laughable and who had the ratepayers finance his midlife crisis.

  5. I am note quite sure what civil liberties you think are being eroded Martyn, but overall, you make a perfectly valid argument. It is a real shame when public assets are taken over by private interests, where the asset could remain in public hands and be profitable and efficient.
