Why Key had to hide Sabin until after election

Many are openly questioning how on earth Key wasn’t told that an MP considered for Cabinet was facing serious allegations.

Let’s be honest, we all know Key knew, the question is why he hide this under the rug. The answer I think is because Key couldn’t risk this very real example of Dirty Politics at it’s dirtiest to pop up before the election right when Hager’s book on Dirty Politics was generating so much heat.

The Right were as surprised as the Left that the sleepy hobbits rallied to Key rather than recoiling in disgust. National couldn’t have risked a real life scandal involving one of their rising stars right when the Party’s Dirty Politics were being scrutinised. Key has kicked for touch while firing a shot over the bows of the Police by appointing Sabin to a Parliamentary board that had critical oversight.

That last action was a goose step too far even for the sleepy hobbits.

This ignites once people understand what the allegations are, then the real heat will go on Key as to when he knew what. If it looks like Key was trying to actively dupe the electorate, the ramping up of right wing shrill rhetoric to distract media attention will intensify.

  1. Yes, but how long will it be before the public actually knows what Sabin has been accused of? I just read this morning that Jessie Ryder’s two attackers outside a Christchurch bar two years ago have only just been named. Key is banking on so much water having passed under bridge before the public officially is told what the story is, that the impact will be minimal. He may come from a finance background but Key has a brilliant mind for playing the law.

  2. John Key and his National Party franchise are in control of the NZ News Paper Media , the Television News Media and Radio Talkback media….So dumbing down are whole country to get one`s policies implemented , will soon have it`s pitfalls …. the lies and deceits will soon surface to the top and their will be NO PLACE to hide!!

  3. What do we not know about this Sabin? Did he resign because a court case may end with imprisonment for him? This would disqualify him from being a member of parliament if the penalty was 2 years. What does Key want kept out of the public domain?

    • @ DOROTHY BULLING –

What Key wants kept hidden is the alleged offence(s) and his evasive behaviour once the police investigation was underway.

To be seen to be having acted dishonestly throughout this issue, could have serious consequences for him, particularly if his support base turns feral on him, over the nature of the charges. And this will happen when it all becomes public knowledge exactly why Sabin is being investigated!

  4. I agree with what Danyl from the Dim-Post wrote …..

“Maybe they thought they could ride it out? That Sabin is an ex-cop and the police would look after their own, and it wouldn’t go to court? No one would ever find out and Sabin’s career could go on as normal.”

They planned on keeping this secret ………..

The fact that John Key kept Sabin on as the chair of the law and justice committee is quite frankly one of the sickest and debauch actions I have ever heard of from a NZ MP.

It would be like Key making a captains call and installing Graham Capill as head of CYF’s …..

I suppose he will now promote ‘ Mark bite em till they scream Mitchell’ , another ex police thug into the vacant chair …..

If National were in power for another 10 years the police stations would be the ‘rape stations’ ……………………… again.

  5. Lets face it . As a nation we were duped at the elections by Key,TV1, TV3 and National Radio. These are the people who should be investigating people like Sabin but actually did the opposite, demonising Hone Harawira and Lila Harre and continuing to provide entertainment or fear inducing propaganda under the guise of news. NZ is populated by people who have little interest in life outside what take-aues to have on friday and what Ritchie McCaw is up to.
Unless we have a genuine investigative journalism/news service that can propagate their message on the mass media we are destined to be a little acolyte of that international pedophile Uncle Sam who abuses his position of authority and fucks over the junior members of the world wide family of nations

  6. The single problem with your logic is that is john key did know then there is no way on planet key that Sabin would have been appointed to chair the justice and crime select committee. That would have too much much risk.

    • Some might say the single problem with your logic is that you assume Key would neither cover up a scandal nor shirk from risk. His career as a financial speculator was based on playing the odds. Want to make stock valuable before selling? Cover up any internal problems in the reports, tell the investors that everything is awesome, and that projections look better than ever, then when investor confidence is at a high, sell out and run before the truth is exposed. Sabin is up to some dodgy stuff? Better put some lipstick on that pig if we want anyone to dance with it.

Moving from finance to politics isn’t going to change his psychology. He has made a career out of taking risks, and he’s still doing it now. All that remains to be seen is when he takes the wrong one, and everything implodes. The problem is, he’s not doing it with private companies now – He’s doing it with a country.

  7. we cant say what sabin [allegedly*] did but the rumours are out hes one sick fucker!

    * Note the word “allegedly”, Darth. Sabin has not been convicted nor even charged with any offense. – ScartletMod

    • What key and sabin (allegedly) did,
Should be a matter for Open Public Debate now,
in the best interests of Democracy.
How else are we going to get on with te trivial matters of life in Nz,
to have that cosy and safe feeling in Nz … yeah right,
      Who Is The Enemy today?
      how many lying mp’s … corporate snake’s
have had their uncontrollable greedy insatiable appetite for money and unlimitid power and control cut off at the snout?
Criminal deeds, Corruption … all controllable with Transperancy and Accountablity to the people who voted these Reptiles into power.

      • You have a good point there liberty4nz. maybe the answer is because John Key needs it to protect his backside never mind Sabin. wonder which judge gave the order,? probably on orders from John Key.All this needs checking into.
The speaker told Andrew Little he couldn’t speak about how long JK knew about Sabin problem because of suppression order, did the speaker put the suppression order on to help PM avoid uncomfortable questions or did it come from law court.
Has anyone seen the suppression order in print?

  8. The answer is actually very straight forward, some media outlet needs to breach the blanket suppression order, like totally breach it; publish everything about it. Everything.

    • Straight-forward? I disagree on that wording. It’s one thing in principle, but the reality is, the media outlets, of which many are foreign owned, are not concerned with the rights and wrongs of domestic affairs – They are concerned with profits. Breaching a suppression order is bad for business when it comes down to paying the penalties, so those pulling the strings will simply shrug their shoulders and let it go.

Also of concern is the idea of we as a society accepting the breach of suppression orders as an acceptable practice. Should we also allow for victims of crime to have their identities exposed because our sense of moral outrage demands our pound of flesh from the perpetrator of the crime? Of course we want criminals to pay for their actions, and if Sabin is guilty of the allegations, then he of all people should be made an example of. However, if a breach of suppression were to expose victims details, then it is grossly unjust for the person who breaches the order to drag the victim into the spotlight.

I do not condone National’s cover up of Sabin’s alleged actions – As an elected representative, he should be accountable – But to demand justice by means of breaking the law, when the complaint is that he as an ex-cop chairing the Law and Order Committee should at all times uphold the law, seems a bit farcical to me. We can’t demand that he follow the law, then demand that we have a right to break it when we feel aggrieved.

  9. Based on your blog, I think it is good cause for a snap election. Not disclosing this information to the general public (whom the PM is suppose to work for) before a general election, surely must be an offence in itself. A ‘smokescreen election’ of the worse kind.

  10. The suppression order was placed on Mps because Key didn’t want to answer when he knew about Sabin.
Key knew that Andrew Little would bring it up,so the speaker like a good little National party stooge stopped Little in his tracks.

The law might have put suppression order in place but Key owns the law and uses it for his own ends.
Key would have to have lied about when he knew about Sabin and the whole of parliament knows it , this pm is not only corrupt but a acts like a criminal who breaks the law .
Unfortunatly National party supporters only read the Herald and are happy to be blind to his faults, they just don’t like to be proved wrong.

    • @ Elle – agree with you.

And I still believe the suppression order was put in place to protect Key, rather than the alleged offender, the “prominent NZer.”

Key’s behaviour in this is comparable to that of a Mafia Don, manipulating the police, the media and now also I suspect, the judiciary as well!

  11. What ever Sabin is being investigated for must be very serious, despicable and disgusting even.
We know it’s an assault of some sort and can rule out common assault because common assault is no biggie for the macho culture of NZ, kiwis are mad for a bit of biffo.
Male assaults female or domestic violence charges would likely have already been processed through the system and also usually don’t have such far reaching super suppression orders..
    What does that leave?

  12. It is just a shame that ACTs three strikes and you’re out policy can not be applied to Keys lies. He would be gone by lunchtime.

  13. Notice the pattern here? Every time one of Keys minions is facing charges or allegations, Key manipulates the law to sidestep incriminating himself. So obviously Key knows more than he wants to let on for the public to know. Anything that could very well be brought out against Key in connection with any allegations against his mates, could land Key in prison, stripped of his position, title, entitlements, privileges and holdings in financial and land ownership. Key will do whatever it takes to avoid legal wranglings involving himself, so he’ll shit on his minions just to save his own skin.
Don’t worry Key, you’re going to hang yourself in your very own exposure to your very own web of lies.

  14. The reason why he hasn’t gone down yet is some basic psychology: people don’t like to be proven wrong. When presented with facts that contradict their beliefs, it causes them to cling even harder to those beliefs.

…and the trouble is that the media very rarely even present the facts. All they do is present National’s opinion. No journalism.

  15. Excellent post Martyn as usual,

This factual picture with good clarity clearly shows we are now living in a corrupted country, worse than most of our trading partners.

Now with gag orders and suppression orders being selectively inserted by the John Key lead Government deliberately into every corner of our free speech conduits, so there is little or no way the real truth will ever come out of this totally Key controlled media, & Judiciary until Key and his henchmen are long gone.

I feel some sympathy for the Police & Judiciary, as they are also compromised from properly investigating & presenting the facts in the best interests of the public.

We now desperately need a clear court order made by Opposition parties to halving of the TVNZ/RNZ asset in the Public interests, to be operated independently from Government control, so the truth and justice can be properly served and presented before the NZ taxpayer.

The price of freedom and democracy is constant vigilance.

  16. I imagine we expat kiwis can say what we like about Sabin on non-NZ sites. WikiLeaks probably wouldn’t mind it, but the Guardian might be best to publicise it.

  17. One site that I know of, has in fact spilled the beans. If it is to be believed then Mike Sabin has indeed been charged. If found guilty, I hope he rots in hell.
