Why NZ Herald’s Labour Party crocodile tears are so audacious

The front page the NZ Herald would use if they thought they could get away with it

No one can take the recent columns by NZ Herald seriously…

John Armstrong: Shadow lingers on National

John Roughan: Labour’s leadership vote matters to us all

…the Herald’s sudden concern for democracy and the fate of the Labour Party must be held up against their active role and participation in empowering Slater in the first place.

Our own exclusive investigation into the Donghua Liu story clearly leaves serious question marks over the Herald’s role in that dirty politics case example that went beyond the scope of the book and Slater’s post last week where he threatened to release emails that would embarrass the NZ Herald suggests he will take down everyone else with him if he goes down.

Giovanni Tiso makes the point in his blog today about this total lack of scrutiny at the role of our media in Dirty Politics

In no particular order: Rachel Glucina is still employed by the newspaper she was using as a mouthpiece for the Minister of Justice. Cathy Odgers was approached by the New Zealand Herald to comment on the political campaign, and the column might well have gone ahead if she hadn’t pulled out herself. Matthew Hooton admitted to Kathryn Ryan his role in the ‘chop chop for Nicky’ affair, and has kept his half-dozen jobs as a political commentator and columnist, including on the public airwaves. Jim Mora continues to invite representatives of a Tory front organisation and the likes of Stephen Franks – whose legal firm made use of Whaleoil – on his popular show at Radio New Zealand. Cameron Slater remains a commentator for Newstalk ZB (which led Wendyl Nissen to resign her job at the station), as is Jordan Williams (which led Helen Kelly to resign), as is David Farrar.

…how I managed to get banned for life from Radio NZ for criticising the Prime Minister while these clowns continue to get front row seats at the mainstream media table of punditry is a question worth asking.

The self censorship and total refusal to self critique their own role in Dirty Politics by the media in NZ means nothing has been learned from this. Yes the mainstream media are biased towards the corporate interests of their owners, yes they have a long, long, long history of racist, misogynist, worker bashing, beneficiary hating content, but to devalue the role of journalism beyond their inherent bias to open deception serves no one other master than corruption.

Seeing how easily NZers were swayed by the mainstream media narratives during the election by rewarding a PM who was as involved in Dirty Politics and mass surveillance lies as our was, that corruption has set in deep.

Malevolence should be rejected and condemned, it shouldn’t be rewarded.

  1. Why are those biased prats always on air, collecting wages paid by (public broadcasting) the taxpayer? I want Martyn back for balance. The small but perfectly formed comment for which he was banned is but a small flutter, compared to the virulent postings of Slater, and the nasty pre-election commentary by the Dirty participants listed (in the Dirty Politics quote).

  2. Some troll just voted down the star system average (not me). You got records TDB? — oh wait that’s the government’s game.

  3. I have made similar comments myself about the Heralds born again objectivity. It’s pathetic as it is shallow. Even Fran O’Sullivan was busily trying to write herself out of her friendly connections to some of the Dirty Politics players and latterly has become concerned at the South Canterbury Finance mess taxpayers have inherited. Far too little, far too late.

However National will rest easy. The same few rich men who own the media in this country will ensure that nothing too damaging will ever reach the public via their crappy entertainment publications masquerading as news. And as the next election draws nearer the good news for National will start all over again. And maybe even Roughan will bring out the John Key 2 sequel , “I love you John” just in time for the 2017 eledctions.

  4. There’s some of us who will never take the MSM seriously again after the last election. The most appropriate word is “phoney”. It’s a indictment from which there is never a comback for the rest of their careers.

  5. As far as the NZ Herald is concerned this is a last ditch effort to save it. It’s basically a cry for forgiveness to the droves of subscribers that have deserted it due to it’s functioning as a National Party propaganda rag and it’s concomitant role in neoliberal social engineering. It’s political ‘journalists’ (Lol) are simply guns for hire-they’ll do anything to keep their (well-paid) jobs. It’s all about the money, ay! The sooner that rag gets flushed down the toilet, the better!

  6. Actually by 2017 TV and Hard copy could be “social media” and “live streamed” out of contention.

The so called “Arab Spring” avoided the msm.

Obama did not build his base on the msm.

No wonder the government is so concerned with “surveillance”.

“Bugger the Terrorists! What the hell are great unwashed saying and doing?

  7. Since the so called election I have never watched TV3 or Tv1 nor bought any Herald publication ,im better for it ,I got so angry the way people were conned, now the Key government is showing its true colours maybe these people who voted National will get wise to whats coming TPP ,TERSA. Maybe some mps in National will get a fit of conscience and get vote of no confidence in this government, but don’t hold your breath , Key chose people who would do as their told ,how anyone would trust Key is beyond belief but they did !!!!!!!!!
