MIL Audio + Text: 5AA Australia – Manning & Godfrey On NZ Force In Iraq + Labour’s Leadership Campaign

Selwyn Manning and Peter Godfrey deliver their weekly bulletin Across The Ditch: “Considering Labour attracted only 24.6 percent of the vote on September 20, imagine what a nasty leadership primary will do to its poll results. I suspect if a poll was conducted now it would be below 20 percent,” Selwyn Manning (at 22 minutes 55 secs).

This week Manning and Godfrey explore the likelihood of New Zealand Government committing combat personnel to the international force conducting air attacks against the ISIL militants in Iraq and Syria.

Also discussed was the New Zealand Labour Party’s leadership woes and how the Party will decide on a new leader via a primary campaign.

Labour suffered an historic loss during the New Zealand General Election on September 20, 2014 gaining only 24.6 percent of the vote.

That was the worst loss it had suffered in 92 years.

BULLETIN BRIEF:

Peter-Godfrey-Selwyn-Manning-cdnNew Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key is considering a request by the United States for the Kiwi defence force to contribute to the international force against ISIL in Iraq.

The public mood here in NZ would suggest New Zealanders share a similar outrage against ISIL as do many in Australia, USA, and Britain.

But there are others here who warn that this country should not take part in any hostilities.

While NZ’s role would clearly not involve airstrikes, as NZ Airforce does not have a strike force as such, it is highly likely New Zealand will commit to logistics support and humanitarian military assistance.

LABOUR’S NASTY LEADERSHIP CAMPAIGN:

The NZ Labour Party has begun its refurbishment in the wake of its dire election result for the general elections.

As predicted Labour’s leader David Cunliffe forced a primary leadership campaign by resigning and then announcing his intention to campaign for the leadership.

The move drew his main opponent Grant Robertson out to commit to the primary campaign, rather than manoeuvre a back room deal to emerge as a sole candidate to become leader.

But the pre-campaign jabs have become particularly nasty with Robertson painting Cunliffe as past his use by date, and Cunliffe insinuating Robertson is merely a beltway politician.

And yesterday it became publicly known that David Cunliffe’s wife Karen Price, had created an anonymous Twitter account so she could verbally attack her husband’s Labour Party opponents.

Apparently she did this on the quiet without her husband knowing!

If Robertson is to have a chance at winning this campaign, he will need to satisfy the strongly conservative Pacific island Labour community and the unions that his sexuality is not an issue.

It is expected that at least one more candidate will put his name forward before the campaign proper begins. If these two front runners continue to destroy each other, the yet to be announced third contender (who I tip to be Stuart Nash – see: Red To The Rescue) just may be a strong alternative choice!

In the meantime, Labour’s finance spokesperson David Parker has become interim leader of the party.
