There were so many questionable facts Key threw at Cunliffe in last nights debate that I emailed a few contacts to ask if they were true. Here is the very long list of things Key said that simply were not true…

-Key says enough jobs being created. Truth: 32,000 more Kiwis unemployed under Nats

-Key says no Chch insurance crisis. Truth: Thousands of households still have unresolved claims

-Key claims ppl will pay capital gains tax on family homes in trust. Truth: they won’t

-Key denies that growth rates are projected to halve. Truth: Treasury says 3.8% this year, 2.1% in 3 years

-Key says Labour policies too costly. Truth: Lab & Nat will spend about same $. Lab will pay down debt with new revenue

-Raising the minimum wage won’t cost jobs.

-Key promising $500-$1000 pa each tax cuts. Truth: $20 a week per taxpayer= $3.5b a year.

-Key says that houses have been built in Nats’ special housing areas. Truth: none have been built

-Key says that he’s spent enough on education. Truth: Education spending under National has fallen in real terms

-Key says fair min wage costs jobs. Truth: International evidence incl US Dept of Labor finds min wage doesn’t cost jobs

-Key says poverty has always been around. Truth: there are 20,000 more kids living in poverty today vs 2007

The disinformation, manipulation and denial of Key’s long list of lies from last night’s Leader’s debate makes Cameron Slater look like an honest journalist.

  1. I believe he was also bring manipulative when he discussed capital gains tax. He pushed Cunliffe on this, and then insisted that there was a cgt. However the IRDs Owen online literature says there is no general cgt. He was twisting the facts to try and make Cunliffe look silly and ill-informed.

  2. I believe he was also bring manipulative when he discussed capital gains tax. He pushed Cunliffe on this, and then insisted that there is a CGT in New Zealand. However the IRD’s own online literature says there is no general CGT. He was twisting the facts to try and make Cunliffe look silly and ill-informed.

  3. John Key claimed the Capital Gains Tax would apply to family homes in a trust. The truth is it does not. Key lied…again.

Unfortunately Cunliffe should have been sure of his own policy but wasnt and he stated that thought that Key possibly knew something he didn’t, so that’s an unnecessary own goal. Perhaps its the far from ideal lead in time to an election as the leader of Labour?

And yet some in the media are claiming DC is reeling or some such shit from this rather than going straight to the source and stating Key made it up as per normal.

Again. It’s all he’s got is to make up shit but that’s all we’ve had for years now. He is full of piss and wind!

The time has long gone when this guy’s word can be trusted or even taken at face value and I am very surprised DC still does.

    • “Capital Gains Tax would apply to family homes in a trust. The truth is it does not.” What a stupid statement. If it wasnt going to apply then Cunliffe should have said so – he is the one wanting to bring in the law.

Perhaps its the far from ideal lead in time to an election as the leader of Labour?
True and if he cant get that right or argue back then perhaps he is out of his depth.

  4. I was hoping that David would bring up Labour’s policy of abolishing secondary marginal tax (unless I missed it when I had to dash out for a few minutes). For people who work two or three part-time jobs (and this is very common now) rather than one full-time job this is very important. Not having to wait a year to get your refund seems to me to be a very good idea. Given John Key’s stated preference for people to decide what they should do with their own money rather than the government deciding, I thought he would have supported this – but apparently not, at least not when it is someone else’s idea.

  5. Another lie from John Key directly toward Cunliffe for you Martyn you king of investigative journalists.

John Key lied again during CHCH leaders debate saying it was the left wing Obama Government that was responsible for keeping the minimum US wage at $7.25 per hr. This is a lie, it is the right wing that are stalling an Obama plan to raise it to $10.10.

Obama pushed Congress to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 but has failed to win the backing of the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. The Democrat-controlled Senate failed last week to muster 60 votes to avoid a filibuster on the issue

  6. I thought Obama was Key’s best golfing buddy. Hope Obama doesn’t find out Key’s been slagging him off in NZ !!! Might be no more golf / photo ops.

  7. Perhaps Key’s true colours are now showing, nastiness and smugness do not sit well on the same face. Is this how he conducted his money dealing? Was he only good at this because money traders are so far removed from reality? They don’t see the hurt their machinations inflict on the people.
