Conservative Party candidate links smacking ban with suicide, sexually transmitted diseases, prostitution and moon landings?

If Chemtrails, faked moon landings and climate change denial weren’t enough, welcome to your new Minister for Spanking,  Edward Saafi...

The anti-smacking law is to blame for youth suicide, youth prostitution and even sexually-transmitted infections, a leading Conservative party candidate claims.

Edward Saafi, who is fifth on the Conservative list and would be elected if they break the 5 per cent threshold, has delivered the striking message during recent speeches at Tongan churches, Fairfax has learned.

“We are starting to recognise the incidence of suicide going up in Pacific communities, especially the Tongan community and people are starting to understand the lead-on from this legislation.

“Once you pass it, children, rather than doing what mum and dad says, they go and commit suicide. It opens up another thing they could do,” Saafi, who holds a doctorate in biomedicine, said.

Asked if he thought there was a direct link between the anti-smacking bill and youth suicide, Saafi said: “It’s just common sense, really. It’s our way of thinking parents have a role to look after their kids, including disciplining them. If the law tells the child that mum and dad can’t discipline you any more, they will do whatever they want, including these other alternatives like suicide. It’s quite appalling.”

…allowing someone as ignorant and dangerously harmful to the public as Edward Saafi anywhere near representation is like letting a book burner into the library.

Closing a legal loophole that was allowing parents who were charged with assaulting their children to get off charges because they were ‘disciplining’ their children has led to suicide, sexually transmitted diseases and youth prostitution has it? On what planet?

Religious bigotry masquerading as sociology is something we really don’t need in NZ. If the Conservative Party of NZ gain 5%, this cretin will be allowed to help form a Government.

If a Key, Colin Craig and Jamie Whyte Government doesn’t motivate you to vote, nothing will

  1. If National gains a majority with the support of the Conservatives, how is the new government going to handle the subject of further asset sales? The Conservatives say they are opposed to asset sales but you can be sure that the Nats have assets like Kiwibank on a list ready to go on the market asap (to pay for another round of tax cuts for the rich you know). Hopefully, we won’t need to find out.

  2. He has a doctrate in biomedicine? From where?
Meanwhile I’m really keen to see the research that backs up these statements. What methodology did he use to prove a causal link between not being hit and the spread of STI’s , sex work & suicide?
My only criticism Martyn is your restraint. The guy is obviously fucking delusional.

    • Where is the research that says our kids are unbalanced and out of control because we are not disciplining them ? Go down Queen Street at 1 am or any town in NZ and see for yourself !!

      • My two daughters apply much, much more discipline to their children than I ever did to them.
We used smacking back then, they never have with their kids. You do NOT need to smack in order to discipline kids, in fact the ONLY discipline that works in any way that matters is self-discipline and that is what my grand kids have, along with being perfectly normal and still perfectly capable of driving you up the wall 🙂
Smacking is extremely lazy discipline, we just didn’t really know that back then

  3. Let them organize another “lets beat up our kids” march. As Mike the Lefty pointed out: the Conservatives don’t like Asset sales, the Nats do. Is it worth pointing out that John Key voted for the anti-smacking bill? If these people end up forming a government together – there will be some issues folks!
