Let’s be honest about National’s education policy and ‘lolly scrambles’

Let’s be honest about National’s education policy shall we? It’s got nothing to do with student achievement, that’s the bait National are using, what National’s Charter School fetish and National Standard league table obsessions are all about is injecting a false competition model into state funded Education to lower the labour costs of teachers.

That’s what this entire right wing experiment in education is all about. Non qualified teachers are cheaper and ranking student achievement to generate competition helps the narrative that better teachers should be paid more while poorer schools get gutted for funding.

National’s right ring experiment with the educational futures of our children is the most ideologically driven madness this country has seen since the 1984 Labour Government. It needs to be recognised for the danger it is and acknowledged that if National get another 3 years it will become a full frontal assault on public education.

Which is why it is so offensive when conservative media blowhards like those on Firstline this morning attempt to paint smaller class sizes, donation free schools and every child having access to a tablet as a lolly scramble election bribe.

When the hell are we going to have those same media pundits and journalists describe the billions bowered by this Government for tax cuts as a lolly scramble election bribe? Why is it universal access to education for all a lolly scramble election bribe? Why the fuck is the money being handed out to the richest members of our society so pristine and ethically pure?

We are talking about the education of our collective whanau, we aren’t talking about bloody lollies!

30 years of neoliberalism has generated a media that views any collective action as open socialism. We deserve better leadership and netter media.
