The CTU welcomes the commitment to the Living Wage in Labour’s immigration policy announcement made this morning and believes that it will assist in improving working conditions for all workers in NZ and is good for migrants. It will drive wages up and is fundamentally more sustainable.” CTU President, Helen Kelly said.

“A significant number of migrant workers are being very poorly treated. I have heard some shocking stories about the working conditions being experienced by some migrant workers including being paid well below what they should be.” CTU President, Helen Kelly said.

“Ensuring migrants are being paid the Living Wage wage will not only mean migrants can live a decent life while in this country working, It will also mean that migrants are not being used as cheap labour to fill jobs New Zealanders would do if it weren’t for the very low wages.” Kelly said.

“The CTU welcomes the commitment to increase New Zealand’s refugee intake in a world with a growing number of workers and their families being displaced by war and other events.” Kelly said.
