Cough, cough – so what you are in fact saying is that the $100k wine & $15k book don’t actually exist?

Oh dear, this is going to be difficult to explain, so it turns out that the $100 000 wine and $15 000 book do not in fact exist

Controversial businessman Donghua Liu has issued a new statement to the Herald confirming “close to” $100,000 in total payments to Labour and its MPs – including anonymous donations – but clarifying that the money was not for one bottle of wine….The signed statement makes no mention of Liu winning an auction for a book, although Herald sources said he paid $15,000 for a book signed by Ms Clark.

…look we all appreciate the mainstream media hate Labour and fear David Cunliffe, but isn’t just making shit up, getting the PM to insinuate hundreds of thousands have been secretly donated based on sources he won’t reveal and then refuse to apologise for such biased reporting just a bit on the nose?

How is any of this acceptable? When does the mainstream media say sorry to the voters of NZ for uncritically swallowing a manufactured National Party smear?

  1. Well I guess, if no one is present….then the tree doesn’t make a sound when it falls down in the forest.
i.e. If the main stream media of NZ don’t mention it, it never happened …………………Where do i buy me some representation from a P.R company like the Herald?

  2. Mr Liu like many moneybags likes to indulge in transference of responsibility when pressed according to the linked article.

He should definitely “open the kimono” now and show perhaps a transfer of funds with dates, or does he carry a bag with tens of thousands in cash with him at all times and not ask for receipts?

Bomber is right that the NZ Herald has mislead readers–where is the retraction and apology? And so it seems has the Prime Minister of this country.

  3. I really hope that New Zealanders are ‘getting it’ that if they want to be an informed voter that they must not read the newspapers or listen to TV News.

What a tragic bunch of useless idiots our mainstream media have become.

    • The problem as I see it is this – So often, you see comments such as “I am sick to death of hearing about (insert scandal here)…” – We have a lot of voters who lack the attention span to see an issue through, and will, as a reactionary measure, vote against whoever keeps raising the issue, out of spite, even if that issue is actually of significant importance, as I personally feel the Cunliffe/Liu affair is (Not the letter itself, but the whole response to it.) National and the MSM work on that MO, as was evident in the Collins case – Many forum entries professed a hatred of Labour on the grounds of continuing to raise the issue, and similar results could be seen with the Banks vs Dotcom affair, as well as the Dotcom vs Crown affair. The ideologues who hate Labour or Greens as a hobby don’t need to be manipulated, they are already well on side. As always, the balance is in the swing voters. This time, however, it looks like their preferred tactic may come back to bite them on the ass. Fingers crossed.

  4. Is the Herald still a Newspaper or a make any old shit up as we go along tabloid rag that is rapidly becoming a laughing stock?

The Heralds source, that is the person/s whose written this latest smear are increasingly looking like someone/s who uses nom de plume “Donghau”. They appear all confused, tending to exaggerate, perhaps have visions of grandeur, misleading, manipulating, omitting important detail and perhaps plain old lying! Hang on, this sounds a lot like the National Party doesn’t it.

Whatever the source is, they are not what one would describe as impeccable now are they?

  5. Isn’t misleading the people an offence? If so I look forward to John Key being prosecuted sometime soon. However, I won’t hold my breath!

    Good comments Martyn.

  6. Hahah, I’m betting that the 50-60K Liu estimates he spent treating Barker in Chongquing plus the couple grand he donated to the rowing club equals the lion’s share (if not all) of the “close to” 100K he claims to have given to “Labour and its MPs”.

And I can’t be the only one who noticed that careful adjustment to the statement, can I? All of a sudden, the ‘statement-that-isn’t-an-affidavit’ goes from referring to “Labour” to “Labour and its MPs”.

Looks like the Herald has served up a fail of epic proportions!

  7. Thank you Bomber for bringing this news to us, as always you get it to your readers very quickly, it’s something I guess we have all suspected. It is doubtful and impossible that anyone will apologise, tomorrow there will be something else maybe DC is wearing a tie that offends the Herald, maybe Jacinda hasn’t got the right blond bimbo hair style or maybe even someone hasn’t got enough hair, I am sure something will be found to try and take away from the excellent policies that are being released.

  8. No apology will be forthcoming as that would immediately blow their and Nationals’ (supposed)credibility out of the water.
Even the sleepy hobbits,(to coin Martyns’ phrase), may start to look twice. They are too spineless to apologise anyway. It would mean admitting to corruption.
Now what I want to see though, are the few commentators that are out there FOR the ‘Left’, step up to the plate and earn their stripes.
I would expect the likes of Chris Trotter, Mike Williams, David Slack, etc to be absolutely incensed at what is going on here and be forcefully and vociferously striking out against it.
I don’t what to see dithering.
I don’t want to see sheepishness.
    I don’t want to stuttering.
I don’t want to see the puffing out of the cheeks and then sighing.
I don’t want to see any over conciliatory, watered down, whimpy opinion.
    I don’t want placation.
I want to see them ‘man up’ and show us what they truly stand for like Bomber used to with his ‘last word’ on Citizen A.
Or are they just part of a domed leather couch, cheroot smoking, whiskey downing commentators club, where bland comment earns them a buck!

  9. We need to stop calling the Herald “granny”. Its completely disrespectful to our actual grannies. I suggest “Muppet” ……… but then I quite like the muppets too. Any suggestions for a suitable term of endearment?

  10. Dong Liu, The Herald and John Key are being very economical with the truth and the facts on this matter definitely an orchestrated Smear Campaign by MSM.

  11. bludgers, bludgers of the system, that’s what we call journalists who line up behind John Key and write whatever he say so National will be voted in again and they can continue their high paying jobs without interruption or higher taxes because journalists individually are the only people they care about.

But they want us, whom they don’t care about to make this the type of system where they want to live and bring up their children

  12. I’m a granny and I object to you denigrating all grannies like me with the tar-brush of that vile piece of Tory trash, gutter-journalism (sic.) “The Herald”.

I don’t normally like letting out my personal information, like being a granny out into the public domain, but most people that visit here are left-leaning and I have been left-leaning since my hip operation. So I am comfortable sharing my ailments and views here on the Daily Blog.

I remember the good old days of left-wing parties, that would pick through their KFC and reject the right wings. We would turn off the electric ovens and put coal in the coal-range aga to bake some scones.

    Where was I?

Oh yes. our bridge club read with interest today ‘tomorrow’s fish and chip paper’ The Herald. commonly called, Key’s Hit-List Diary. As an older voter who has voted for Winston, I am definitely, now changing and will be voting Labour, to pay homage to my forebears and go back to my roots on the Coast.

As an older, more discerning granny, the smear tactics being employed in the Herald remind me of what my Pa told me about the way Goebbels and Herr Hitler manipulated propaganda and people.

I went on the interweb and found this:

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
    Joseph Goebbels.

Isn’t it only 98 days till we can change all this – so that the “State” will not protect them?
