Cunliffe safe – the looming backlash

Cunliffe is safe. Whatever forces had considered any action have been bleached by the sudden and intense scrutiny. The backlash looming now will be what hand National has had in generating this smear.

National’s skill at smears is well documented in the Hollow Men, and those skills are being employed again. This time around however National risk having those smears exposed.

The line is that after denouncing the influence of Donghua Liu, David is a hypocrite for not remembering a letter he sent 11 years ago on behalf of Donghua Liu. That’s the level of banality our media have stooped to.

285000 children live in poverty, house prices are unaffordable, students are in debt with massive cuts in post-graduate education, the poor are hurting, the rich are richer, 800000 NZers live in poverty, our economy is not attuned to the climate change realities we face and our social infrastructure is groaning.

We don’t have any of the actual issues facing voters, we have manufactured smears cooked up by the Government and broadcast uncritically by the mainstream media. Bless John Armstrong and all, but  calling for Cunliffe’s resignation???

Cunliffe has stamped his authority on this situation. Whoever leaked the information to National to begin with is a dish best served at a later date when it’s stone cold.

There are many more weeks in front of us.  John Key will not win all of them.

  1. I said it on this blog several months ago: National will make the election a personality contest because that is the only way Key can win. If National was forced to campaign on policies and achievements it wouldn’t stand a chance. I also said months ago that the MSM will do anything to keep the John Key smile’n wave show going after September 20 and yesterday was your proof. I hope David Cunliffe keeps his nerve and refuses to buy into the dirty personal attacks that John Key thinks he is so clever to have started.

    • You mean like Helen and Mike did when they tried to discredit Key a few elections back? Maybe that trick was learnt from the dirty left. Thing with Cunliffe is, he’s so good at discrediting himself no one else actually needs to lift a finger, he’s the instigator of his own personality contest and losing…badly.

      • your talking about that trip to aussie that the MSM also took – and didnt the MSM break the story all on their own?

      • Tried to discredit Key ? How do you discredit a lying scumbag ? The “man” was on the Transport Committee asking questions about the future of TranzRail while holding UNDISCLOSED SHARES in that Company, then he lied his arse off about just how many shares he had whilst desperately trying to cover it up. How he got away with a prosecution for insider trading still amazes me. The number of lies he has been caught telling since then are legion, to the point that we can all tell when he is lying now, his lips move…
As for a “personality”, apart from being a smarmy slimy smartarse in Parliament I’m not that sure that Key actually has one. It seems he relies on his briefing notes to give the “appropriate” response to any situation.
But hey, if you want to support a sleazy lying scumbag to lead this country…. birds of a feather and all that

        • Yes Seaweed.
There’s one rule for Key and National one rule for everyone else, and I for one am getting heartily sick of this crap.
You have summed Key up to perfection.
What I have found, is that the people out there who think he is real ‘personality’ don’t actually have much of one themselves. They are usually bland ,boring, completely money driven, possess sheep like behaviour and are devoid of any cultural capital.
That’s what happens when you have a corporate media telling you what to think.
Because most corporates fit the above description!
It’s a vicious cycle and it needs to be broken.

  2. This situation is so easily turned to DC’s advantage….whereby the tables are turned and the issues raised above loose no potency whatsoever.. done rightly…the combined effect can finally give DC and the Labour machine a steamroller effect.

It is inexcusable that such conditions are allowed to fester in this country .. a large ,cancerous weeping sore in our community. It has also to be mentioned of the huge borrowing that this Govt has done to support that groaning infrastructure and to bolster welfare.

Instead of advancing initiatives that would actually create wealth…this Govts neo liberal , short sighted ‘hands off’ ideology common to Mont Pelerin doctrine has encased lack of initiative and enshrined it as a virtue.

I suppose we can let them off the hook somewhat as they did promise a bicycle path that would employ around 200 people..however..I do recall them saying they would create another 200,000 jobs or thereabouts around the same time. But we did get a bicycle path.

    Musn’t grumble ,Foggy…

  3. Old ‘loose lips sink ships’ Key has already shot himself in the foot.
It’s a pity Hadlee didn’t bowl a toe jamming Yorker into it as well, just to finish him off.
Key and English are already at odds over who knew what, and when.
It’s like watching Laurel and Hardy.
This will come back to bite National big time as will revelations about some of their donations.
    They are just so dumb.
The ‘trust’ narrative, of this recent ‘storm in tea cup,’ is of course preparation for when Key gets exposed closer to the election, and that’s when this Liu story will rear its’ head again to try and neutralise the fallout.
    Their desperation knows no bounds!

  4. What comes after Key’s visit to the US and hand-shakes with Obama?

Dotcom’s extradition hearing, I suppose, and not much else. The election campaign is looming, in its intensive phase, and while the economy looks healthy, there have already been news about growth slowing, there have been more business closures, job losses and the US and China also seem to have less favourable economic forecasts now.

Hence there will in the midst of winter be a phase of less “good news” to spread by Key and his government, which must worry them. That is why they try all to discredit David Cunliffe and Labour, to ensure they will win the election.

They will use all tactics to their avail, but today they faced the first challenge, slowly being exposed for tricks they used, as they knew for weeks about a letter, that the Herald only just obtained.

With such ammunition in their arsenals, the Nats will use it, of course, and there is likely to be more of this sorts, all stuff from the peculiar top drawer in John Key’s office, as he once boasted to have gathered so much info on Labour in it.

  5. Yes, Commander if you say the the smear has been bleached then very well. Can we carry on now? Sorry for thinking otherwise. Wont do it again. Really, I wont. Sorry again. Is that thing loaded ?

  6. Even if Cunliffe is safe for now, which I strongly doubt, Labour isn’t.

I suspect there resides deep within the collective unconscious of Labour’s caucus a self-sabotage instinct born out of the moral residue that collected there 30 years ago when the party betrayed its core principles, its legacy, and its members.

This week is just another reminder that the champagne’s flat and that the punters are stuffing stale leftovers into their pockets. The bunting’s draped in cobwebs and ever so tatty, and the band can’t hold a steady beat any more. The party’s over and only those high on hubris are left to dance with the tragically confused stragglers.

The backstory and the plot twists that colour the Labour Party story of the past 30 years are biblical in complexity, and the multiple betrayals Arthurian in scope. If ever it has felt that the dénouement was approaching, it hasn’t felt quite this strong before.

Frankly, I’m sickened and I’m bored. I’m disappointed but hardly surprised. True progressives deserve better than this and so too does the rest of New Zealand.

I don’t for a moment believe this is cause for celebration, but it is time to move on.

  7. The only reason he is safe is because no one wants to lead the sinking ship named the Labour Party of NZ hahahaha!

  8. @ Fatone . What ? Do you mean that same Labour Party ship that was torpedoed by traitors like you back in the innocent 1980’s ? Hahahahahahahahahaha .

    • Yep, and with David Cunliffe as Captain of that ship, it won’t be sailing far!

What idiot goes to parliament yesterday to ask questions to the government why they can find his letter but his own staff cannot find?
Answer? A Labour Party leftie, hypocrite lefty, that’s who.

  9. One letter sticks to a Labour leader thanks to the MSM right-wing going full bore. While the piles of sh#te wrought by Key slough away unnoticed by them.
David Cunliffe is producing policy that will be in the interest of Kiwis, not just the banker’s boys.

  10. Incidentally fat one . That’s called the last laugh . It’s what Cunliffe will get when he breaches the rotting gunwales of the listing National Party Shit Barge . Which fat , festering rat will be the first to jump when that horror starts to sink like a post barbi turd ? Jonky’s got the cunning for it ? bennett’s got the arse for it ? collins has the lips for it ? parata has the claws for it ? tolly may have the whiskers , who would know ?

I’m getting the hang of this nautical vernacular .

    Again … hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha .

    • Don’t worry, when Labour get destroyed in the election, il come back and my comment with be

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

Because I think I will be the one smiling with David Cunliffe goes back to his doer upper in Herne bay hahahaha. It was great voting on a poll on the stuff website which asked you do choose “which gaffe was David Cunliffes best” it was so hard to choose. All were so good!

  11. I cant believe all the dribble I read in these posts.

Why cant people see that Cunliffe is dog meat. National didnt organise this – someone in Labour did. Just like someone in Labour organised the deposing of Palmer only a couple of months before the election that Moore lost. I think its about 1990.

If there is another poll that gives labour under 25%, then all hell will break loose.

And wont that be fun to watch as they tear themselves to bits.

      So goes the National/ACT spin.

Unfortunately for you guys, it’s nought more than a masterbatory fantasy. No evidence whatsoever.

Give us evidence, Barry. We’re very, very, verrrrry keen to know.

In other words; put up or STF Up!

    • Thats right it just had to come from within, Jesus you conned National people make me laugh. When did you last get a pay rise. Say goodbye to your tea breaks. You are traitors to your fellow New Zealanders.

  12. This time around however National risk having those smears exposed.

    Yea, nah.

Exposed but not properly investigated or publicised. MSM will treat all National Govt. misdemeanour with the equivalent of the John Key shoulder shrug.

Given current MSM bias there will be little mileage made.

  13. When the going gets tough for National, it gets nasty. That’s a known fact.

I was expecting something like this to rise out of the shit pile from the Key mob, aided and abetted no doubt by his good friend and confidante`, muck raker supreme, WhaleOil and some weeping sore National minions to do do the trolling!

It’s election time after all and National knows too well it can’t rely on merit to be re elected, so out comes dirty US Republican party tactics to try and discredit the main opposition leader, Cunliffe.

A distinct picture is beginning to emerge here. Key and his immigration minister Woodhouse, in possession of the Cunliffe/Liu letter over a month ago. Obviously tucked away in Key’s dirt drawer, from which he can refer to from time to time, when things get a bit sticky for him.

Next move, Key goes overseas, letter becomes public knowledge, via NZ Herald, undoubtedly on the PM’s instructions, so he can’t be implicated, despite having his grubby stamp all over it! A sure indication Key has msm in his pocket and is prepared to use media in any way he can to dish the dirt on his behalf!

The work of a cowardly despot? I think so.

Looking more like a sordid smear campaign from Key and National each day. However it’s going horribly wrong for the PM, with Cunliffe prepared to face up to and challenge his accusers, something Key and cronies weren’t quite expecting. Apart from anything else, this point on its own, is gaining Cunliffe more strength and support from his team and the public, placing him in a more positive position than before.

  14. Bit rich from National here considering they are ones who encouraged and bent rules to actually get Liu in in first place. Am I wrong in noting that national ministers are in breach of crimes act 1961 sections 99,102,103 and 71?? in respect of dotcom and probably Liu cases? And that sufficient evidence for prima facie cases now exist via sworn testimony from J Banks trial in first instance, and in fact private charges have been filed already against PM and policeman re same and conspiracy.. And that further charges should be likely as it is evident that gain or reward or employment advantage or benefit are now clearly evidenced in high court testimony? Seems to me the coal pit is calling the sky black here. Do tell me I am wrong, but are we not facing a constitutional crisis if anybody files these charges? Not to mention employment offer by national to Shane Jones??? ??

  15. Why there isn’t a planned face-off televised meetings between Cunliffe and Key, and perhaps other party leaders. it would benefit the voters to compare and make informed choices instead of leaders hiding and letting their handler’s and the media do the work for them. In short who knows what we are being fed is not a load of garbage? Are we, as voters, supposed to be guided by media and phony polls? I want to hear them debate issues and take calls from viewers and I would like this to be done over a series of nights before election day. Heard about try before you buy? Well, am not voting until I hear the buggers, on all 4TV stations.

    • 25 or more years ago it was more like what you are advocating Ahmed; where you would get open discussions or debates by opposing ministers on relevant conflicts of interest. But that’s long gone.
Now we get told what to think by reporters,(not journalists),who are barely out of nappies. These reporters are ‘incentivised’ with attractive salary packages to spin stories a certain way, to suit their paymasters .
Its’ been the beginning of the end of a decent society, as we used to know it, for some time now.
And because we have no open discussions any more, we now have 250,000 people in poverty, in supposedly a first world country ,of only 4 million people.
This why we desperately need a change of government and therefore philosophy!
