Miraculously, just as John Key needed some distraction from questions over his role in the GCSB aided assassination of a NZ citizen, Canon Media Award winning hate speech merchant and Prime Ministerial confidant, Cameron Slater, decides now is the right time for a bit of good old fashioned Muslim bashing.
“Jihad?” screamed the NZ Herald, “Jihad!” Whaleoil roared back.
A juvenile and violently bullying power play between two factions at a mosque has suddenly been elevated to Terror Alert Apricot. NZ should brace for Taxi Shuttles to be rammed into the Beehive and Air NZ Planes to be flown into the Sky Tower. The boss of security took the chanting and convulsions as a serious ‘religious assassination’, and the Herald even managed to rope in an Academic to throw some petrol on this brewing religious war.
The mainstream reporting around this has been so shrill it’s made Slater almost bass line funk in comparison.
Where the NZ Herald will insinuate, Whaleoil can declare. Apparently we are now on course for the end of Western Civilisation as we know it. In his pogrom inspiring blog, charmingly entitled, “WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING WHEN THE “JIHAD” COMES TO YOU?“, Canon Media Award winning hate speech merchant and Prime Ministerial confidant, Cameron Slater, warns us all of the impending Muslimocalypse…
I expressed my concern about the Islamification of the West, and how we, as New Zealanders can avoid the lessons learned the hard way by other countries. These are lessons that include bloodshed and death. And not in the Middle East – in the center of cities that a few decades ago looked just like the ones you and I are living in.
…he’s as pleasant as road kill isn’t he? If book burning were a sport, Slater would be Olympic medal decorated. He continues with his hate rant…
Bluntly put, their expectations and way of life can not be integrated with ours without one side making a compromise they aren’t willing to make. If left to its natural cause, this causes the types of violence and armed conflicts we are seeing in Europe.
…he’s almost hopeful that there will be violence isn’t he?
Here’s my view on religion. If you need to take your ethical and moral cues from a supernatural being, good luck to you. Expect to be the butt of satire from time to time, because hey, what’s not funny about listening to an invisible flying magical wizard right? But if you want to believe in that, then who am I or the State to intervene? That’s between you and your invisible flying magical wizard friend.
Now do I personally believe that when Muhammad was asked how people should dress and he said, “modestly”, do I think for one second he meant wearing a burqa? No, I don’t think he meant that, but seeing as this isn’t my religion, it sure as hell ain’t my right to tell others who do follow it how they should interpret it.
We live in a free Democracy and we don’t allow the State to decide what you can wear and what you can believe in because the overbearing weight of such a State would cease being free and Democratic and quickly deteriorate into full blown fascism. No Government should have the power to tell you what to wear and no Government should have the power to punish you for believing in something, that’s giving the State far too much power.
If we in the West want to stop radicalising Muslims, then we in the West need to stop creating the grievances that give that radicalism righteous currency.
Open dialogue and mutual respect is the way different communities learn to integrate and live together, singling out extremes in the other and attempting to use fear to decide our responses based on those extremes is a certain recipe for the very conflict Slater claims to want to avoid.
What Slater is doing here, and why it is so dangerous, is tarnishing an entire religion with the actions of a fringe minority. The extremist factions of Islam are about as representative of the vast followers of that religion as the KKK are to Christianity. We don’t Judge the majority of Christians as cross burning racists, and it’s just as childishly stupid to do it to Muslims.
Slater is fanning a hate the mainstream media seem all too happy to fuel.
Ugly all round. We are a better people than this debate.
