Headline: Workplace tragedies must stop

Today’s observation of Workers’ Memorial Day is a poignant reminder there is still much to be done to improve workplace safety in New Zealand, Labour Leader David Cunliffe says.

“Over the last year 51 Kiwis died doing their jobs.

“What a tragic and needless waste of life.

“Every New Zealander has the right to feel safe at work, to know they will be going home to family at the end of the day.

“The shocking toll at Pike River and 11 forestry deaths in a year are not statistics any of us can be proud of.

“Those deaths are the reason our workplace culture must change, and the reasons why Labour is absolutely committed to preventing more workplace deaths and injuries.

“Policies already include better regulatory protection for our miners, the introduction of a corporate manslaughter law and improved forestry legislation.

“Labour will also ensure workers have a say on health and safety issues and are protected if they refuse to do work they know is unsafe.

“We will ensure New Zealand has a world best practice health and safety regime in place, one that is fit for the 21st century and one that hardworking Kiwis deserve,” David Cunliffe said.
