Headline: Businesses need to respect workers this Easter

Businesses intent on flouting Easter shopping laws should face stiff penalties, Green Party industrial relations spokesperson Denise Roche said today.

This Easter, at least one major garden centre chain intends to open on Good Friday despite this being in breach of Easter trading laws.

“New Zealand’s shopping laws are already among the most deregulated in the world,” Ms Roche said.

“Retail workers in New Zealand can expect upwards of 350 odd days that they may be required to work and Easter is one of the few times they get a small break.

“Unfortunately, the chance for all workers to enjoy a rest over Easter is once more under attack from businesses seeking to maximise their profits.

“For the umpteenth time, a large chain of garden stores is intent on making people work over Easter.

“National MPs have unsuccessfully tried to push members’ bills that would make it legal for businesses to open throughout all of Easter.

“Thankfully MPs from all sides of the House have voted these bills down.

“While workers are still protected by Easter trading laws, it is time to make certain they are enforced,” Ms Roche said.
