Headline: Christchurch transport plan stalled once again

Christchurch commuters face further frustrating delays to the rebuilding of the central city’s transport network after the Government admitted its plan is once again delayed by months, Labour’s Christchurch Transport spokesperson Megan Woods says.

“Christchurch Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee has said in answers to Parliamentary questions that the full implementation plan for the central city transport is still another five months away.

“When the delayed plan was finally released assurances were given that there would be a full implementation plan by the end of 2013, but he is now saying that won’t be completed until May 2014.

“This plan has been subject to constant delays since it was originally announced by the minister in 2012.

“It was originally due to gain approval from Cabinet in March last year, but no details were released until November.

“This is not good enough. We simply cannot afford these delays. We all want to see Christchurch up and running.

“Good transport infrastructure is critical for encouraging people back to the centre of the city, so getting the plan underway should be a top priority for the minister and the Christchurch Central Development Unit.

“Gerry Brownlee needs to explain the cause of this latest delay and tell Cantabrians what he’s doing to get Christchurch moving again,” Megan Woods says.
