It’s very sad to see Whaleoil suffer an attack that has taken him offline. Terribly sad, but what exactly did he say to attract such attention? Well, his comments last night were pretty inflammatory…

Blogger puts the boot in
Provocative right-wing internet blogger Cameron Slater was today standing by a headline that described Greymouth car crash victim Judd Hall as “feral”.

Mr Hall, a 26-year-old from Runanga, died when a car in which he was a backseat passenger left the road and crashed into a house about 11 o’clock on Friday night.

At 7.21am on Saturday, Mr Slater’s Whale Oil blog site carried a brief story on the crash under the heading, ‘Feral dies in Greymouth, did world a favour’.

When contacted by the Greymouth Star today, Mr Slater accepted that he did not know Mr Hall or his family, but justified the “feral” description by saying: “It is Greymouth, isn’t it? Didn’t Helen Clark say that you are all feral?”

He said anybody travelling at 140kph in a car in a 50kph area was ‘feral’, whether on the West Coast or in south Auckland.

He did not regret the headline and would not be apologising for it.
“It’s a tragic situation but where is it written in the rule books that you have to take into account people’s feelings?” the blogger said.

Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn said the headline was “an utter disgrace”.
“This young lad has a mother and father who are going through a great deal of hurt at the moment. It’s compassion and support they need at the moment, not condemnation from the likes of Slater,” Mr Kokshoorn said.

“They (the parents) are people that Slater has never met, does not know, so for him to describe their offspring as feral is the lowest of the low and an utter disgrace.”

…I’m not sure how a passenger in the backseat of a car who dies is ‘feral’ and seeing as Cameron has admitted he doesn’t know the man who died or his family, the ‘feral’ tag seems utterly inappropriate. When challenged on the abuse, Cam shrugs and effectively says he doesn’t have to take into account peoples feelings.

Classy, real classy.

    • I lost my brother in a car accident, he was only 28yrs old.
For se journalist to label “feral dies…..” Is total out of line and callous with a cold heart. Not only do we the living lose our loved one by accident there is a void that no-one or nothing can replace our loss!
But to have it brandished on some website and then openly admit that he should not apologise for what he has said, he is basically saying to Mr Halls loved ones……”I am not sorry for the emotionally hurt that I have caused to add to your Trauma of losing your loved one in death!! Not too mention this family has suffered a great loss of sons in the past.
Old saying what goes around comes and and you shall reap what you sow!!!!!

I have no sympathy what soever for this man!!

Take it on the chin and wallow in the comments and negative responses you are receiving because you have expected the family of Mr Hall to wallow in your “feral comments”

      • But that’s the point isn’t it, Cameron thinks he is a journalist, he thinks he offers superior content to that of the mainstream media whom he regularly mocks (& for good reason too I must admit) who are anything but “decent journalist[s], trained and skilled” yet he is NOT a journalist & never WILL be a journalist.

Journalists can stoop pretty low, but never as low as Cameron.

I don’t ever recall a news outlet mocking a 10 year old boy & calling him dumb because he is too large to play rugby with his own age group or ridiculing the overweight manager of a struggling food bank & saying that she has eaten all the supplies.

And I don’t ever recall a MSM saying that the death of a passenger in a vehicle did the world a favour.

It is because Cameron has no filter, no empathy & no genuine desire to present the news that he will never be considered a journalist.

This is why he is not afforded the same rights in his current defamation case re protecting sources & this is why the NZ Press Council will never grant him entry.

He is a shock jock. He is smart enough to be more, but he chooses to trawl through the gutter instead.

  1. Karma. Not the mystical variety. But the human penchant for utu.

There are 7 billion-plus humans on this planet. He’s working his way through antagonising every single one of them.

  2. The truth is, he has hurt and offended so many people for so long, that this attack could really have come from anywhere. Much as I’m sure many people from Greymouth despise Cameron Slater for his disgusting remarks about this young man, there are many more people who hate him equally.

Whatever else his deficiencies (and there are many), he certainly isn’t lacking in enemies.

    • Firstly, A bully complaining of being bullied is ironic!
Next, speaking as a (former, well there is no former) coaster. He can never ever show his face in that part of the country unless he wants to visit the ER.
And no, its not a threat from me just to clear the air legally.

    • if they are such good friends, then let them stop their youth from driving around the place like idiots

I have been there many times and see the same stupid driving every time I go there

  3. When challenged on the abuse, Cam shrugs and effectively says he doesn’t have to take into account peoples feelings.

Specifically he asked where it said in the rule book he had to take into account people feelings. This is the trait of a sociopath – if it’s not specifically illegal then they’re allowed to do it whether or not it morally acceptable.

It’s like the AirNZ case a few years back that was chartered by the Australian armed forces to take combat personnel to Iraq. NZers were aghast that it had happened when NZ was against the war and yet the response from the RWNJs was that it was legal.

These types of people, quite simply, do not understand morality.

  4. “It’s a tragic situation but where is it written in the rule books that you have to take into account people’s feelings?”

    Lack of empathy
    Lack of remorse
    Disinhibited or bold behavior

The characteristics of a psychopath and what we witness from Cameron Slater on a daily basis.

  5. I think it should be pointed out that the journalist on the Greymouth Star – Tui Bromley – did a good job in pointing out the lie behind Slater’s Helen Clark reference:

“The ‘feral West Coasters’ label has been around since 2000, when former Prime Minister Helen Clark was speaking on National Radio at the height of the native timber logging debate, but her comments were taken out of context.
A transcript of the sentence in question shows that Ms Clark actually said: ‘Attitudes of some on the West Coast could be fairly feral’.”

      • So basically what you’re saying, is that Slater is baaaaaad for describing as a feral someone who was a very close friend to bona-fide ferals, the kind who lose control at 140 kph in a suburban area, and who was thus by implication a feral. But Aunty Helen is awright because she just criticized the views of people whose jobs depended on sustainable native logging, by calling their ‘attitudes’ feral. Because that’s not derogatory of those actual working-class decent people.

        • So what you are saying is that when Cameron Slater took a photo of himself speeding in Australia that’s different because why?

        • @ Paul – there is a vast difference between personal insults (calling someone “feral” or other names) and addressing someones beliefs/attitudes/opinions/ideology.

It’s called sticking to the issues and not “playing the man” (or woman).

It would be the difference between me calling you a “F**kwit” – or me addressing the issue you’ve raised that blaming the passenger in a car that crashed , without knowing the details, cannot be justified because you have no knowledge of the event.

          See? Personal vs Issue.

If you can’t see the difference – try harder to figure it out.

  6. cameron slater spent a over 12 hours on his facebook wall defending what he said about judds death doin the world a favor hes deleted those statuses now that hes gone to police they had hundreds of comments, cameron was having a great time saying things like he was collecting the death threats “like baseball cards”.

  7. Yes I’m very sad that Whaleoil has gone offline….as sad as one can be when their eyes are no longer haemorrhaging.
I like the blog merely for the odd moment of truth & intelligent difference of opinion that occasionally crops up, but for the most part I consider it to be a platform for cyber-bullying indicative of a failed wannabe politician who is doomed to be Collins attack dog so seeks to be the most popular nasty propagandist on the planet. And it works. He can now run to the media like a regular ole fame whore & complain about how he is being picked on.
Well boohoo. I have said it to him & I’ll say it here. When you lie down with dogs you get up with fleas; you can’t be both judgmental & righteous. The two are poles apart. Cameron has had many chances to use his blog for good, to use it as a way to not just offer an intelligent right wing alternative to the MSM (yes such a thing can exist for you hardcore lefties), but also as a way to encourage voters to get involved, to eliminate the disconnect between the voter & the politician.
Yet being the master of his own misfortune as always Cameron seems determined to remain in the gutter & hang out with the guttersnipes.
He goes too far all the time & has done for years – from publishing posts that are a hair breadths away from inciting violence (clearly demonstrated in his marriage equality posts), to ridiculing children & adults alike, publishing unnecessary detail on Len Brown’s sex life & calling a deceased person feral.
Yes absolutely Judd Hall was making the wrong choices. He was 26 years old & chose to get in a car with people who had no qualms at putting the lives of themselves & others in danger. That makes the driver feral for sure, but for the man who died it just makes him incredibly stupid. Yes he should have known better, but that does not make him a feral nor does that justify ridiculing him when he has just passed & his family are grieving….for the 4th time I might add. Cameron admits he knows nothing about the family, well even so, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that when someone has lost 3 siblings it can really screw you up. So perhaps it is no wonder that Hall’s decision making processes were sometimes not always up to scratch.
But irrespective of this there is a time & place for things & for Cameron to capitalise on his blog’s popularity & then use a family’s grief as a way to harness more popularity, more ratings, more advertising & more revenue is despicable. He has no heart, no understanding of what it means to be empathetic. He is quick to judge & very slow to seek all the facts. He has no filter & no concept of what is good, what is right.
Altruism it would seem – something that should be second nature to any Christian – is a concept that has clearly escaped Cameron Slater.
So yaye. Good stuff. Long may his blog remain out of action. It is about time that something like this happened.
As for those making death threats – shame on them. Doing so makes you just as vile.

  8. He obviously was looking for some sort of response when he started making remarks about West Coasters being feral and he got it. If he was so worried about the death threats against him and his family – wouldn’t the easiest thing to do be apologise??? He did not seem too worried when he was receiving the comments on facebook lastnight. In fact it seemed to me that he was retaliating to every comment and baiting them all up!

  9. Oh my heart bleeds for him – NOT.
What a nasty piece of work he is. That site of his, is there specifically to stir shit and draw attention to himself
Watching and listening to him crying foul after what he said was just pathetic and all I have to say is that, in the end, this will be his greatest expose – that he is no more than a narcissistic sociopath. Is there such a thing? If not, even more appropriate, he’s one of a kind

  10. It is the ‘does the world a favour’ part that I consider extremely hurtful and offensive. ‘Feral’ is just name calling, but to suggest that the world is better off because this young man is dead is terrible. I don’t understand why the outrage isn’t more about that part of the headline. And as the 1st commenter remarked, Slater is asking the court to consider him to be a journalist, well he just shat in his own nest there.

  11. He did not regret the headline and would not be apologising for it. “It’s a tragic situation but where is it written in the rule books that you have to take into account people’s feelings?” the blogger said. Well kinda sums it up really we dont have to take into account Camerons Slaters feelings … we can say what we want without any of his feelings been hurt .We can use the same method as he does …… feet firmly planted in ones mouth ….

    • I spent the best twelve years of my life on the coast, had to leave before all the fun and laughter killed me 🙂

  12. I wonder if Slater is taking account of his own daughter’s feelings right now? Unlikely, given that now he has dragged her unmercifully into his very public evisceration.

The rulebook he ascribes to is his own. He has broken the rule in the book that a great many others ascribe to, called the Social Contract. His punishment has only just begun, and there are no laws in his book to stop it.

    • What a piece of pond scum Cameron is. Wrong, wrong, wrong, to threaten his Whanau, or him physically. Bombard his stupid website with inane comments[ whoops that already happens] on a daily basis.Someone who’s right wing philosophies are read daily by like minded nutters like him, are to be pitied not threatened.
Cameron, the main percentage of coasters are nice friendly people. but like anyone, get upset over disgusting comments such as you’rs.

      • I think a lot of what Slater got was a gut reaction, far from what his comment was in the first place. People’s emotions will die down, Slater’s arrogance probably won’t

  13. Personally I find it a bit strange that there is all this focus on the Head Line, why is the focus not on why shit for brains think it is ok to drive at such speeds putting other peoples lives in danger. Yes, sad the guy is dead, the comment a bit OT, but lets focus on the issue, a shit head drove too fast.

    • It seems that the obvious has escaped you. The focus on the headline is there because Cameron made it the focus, he is the one that chose to make a contentious feral & callous remark in a time when people are still coming to terms with their grief, then had the audacity to run to the media & cry that he is now being picked on. He chose to put himself & his family in the spotlight by being a twat & now he is paying the price – ridicule & vigilantism.

The issue of the driver who chose to go 140km in a 50km is a separate issue & one that we deal with & speak about all the time. We have advertising, seminars, media segments etc that all talk about speed vs driving to the conditions etc & nothing changes. But the driver is being prosecuted & he has paid a fairly high price by killing his friend so in terms of him he should hopefully be on his way to learning a pretty valuable lesson.

Cameron on the other hand, never learns anything. If he hadn’t run bleating to the media then this would have all disappeared pretty quickly – people would have just happily mocked him online for a while & the blog war would abated as soon as the next juicy topic popped up.

He chose to attack a walnut with a sledgehammer & his refusing as usual to admit he stuff up, so the saga continues.

The good news, from a centre right voting point of view, is that Collins et al might finally give the tosser the flick, finally cut the apron strings.

And if this happened, well we might find his little tipline goes a bit quiet.

That said we can expect the blog to continue & thrive ….not because people love discussing politics, nope, just because the masses love trash! They love the porn & guns & they love the tabloid crap of being able to mock whoever is the face of the day and being able to say what they like regardless of the consequences…..privilege that is of course only for those who toe Cameron’s party line….anyone else is a troll.

  14. Slater is highlighting a social problem thats proving deadly to kiwis everywhere regardless of where you live. Its not ok to be driving around in middle of night at 150km/hr driver or passenger. Its not ok to try to flee a pursuing police car. Its not ok to be around people who live risky lifestyles? Dont hear anyone here talking about those issues. But arent they the real issues and the price you pay for breaking them? Why arent people speaking out about these issues. Doesnt matter? Then your negative opinion/comments on Slaters views on the incident really is based on nothing.

  15. It is a shame that Slater used the term in this incident, by which he has shown he has no empathy, or emotional maturity, to understand the effect of his post.

But I do agree with him that there is a ‘Feral underclass’ as he put it..but it has nothing to do with this young man’s death, May he rest in peace, and condolences to his family.

    • Rizzo – go back to Whaleoil. That cesspit is now “open for business” again. Isn’t that where judgemental losers like you congregate to validate each other’s vileness?

Your “courage” in defaming a dead person, whilst hiding behind a pseudonym, is noted.

  16. I’m incensed by the respect the media give Cameron Slater simply be repeating everything he ever scratches.
He is a low-life of the first degree and I don’t believe he’s had all the threats he’s complaining of, where’s the proof?
talk about chickens coming home to roost…glass houses, stones, etc.

I really hope he visits the coast sometime soon so they can show him the error of his ways.
He has certainly turned into his surname

    • No one has the right to publicly humiliate a family who have just lost a child …. No parent deserves to lose a child and the tragic circumstances here just make the commenting inhuman. I don’t think any of us can imagine the unbearable pain this family must be in now.
This Slater twit needs to grow up…
