Seven Sharp – two thirds of this panel had better options to pay their mortgage

TVNZ have this incredibly funny habit of taking a show we all complain about and hate upon and manage to change it in a way that makes us scream and beg for the original version we were bitching about to come back and not the horror Frankenstein creature of evil TVNZ marketing department has managed to mutilate into existence.

It happened with Close Up. For years I’d been critical of Mark Sainsbury’s interviewing technique which I described was like being cuddled to death by a friendly family labrador. It wasn’t until the TVNZ marketing department vomited up Seven Sharp that I appreciated how good we had it with Sainsbury .I actually had the opportunity about 3 weeks ago to apologize to Sainsbury face to face when I bumped into him on Queen street. I apologized for all the harsh criticisms I’d made of him in the light of the public broadcasting hate crime that is Seven Sharp.

I feel I will need to make the same apology to Alison Mau because in their infinite ability to degrade their current product and credibility to almost Whaleoil-esk levels, TVNZ have replaced Alison for Mike Bloody Hoskings, a man so right wing, Genghis Khan is to the left of him.

In an election year, week nightly, Mike Hoskings will look down his nose at NZ and explain why John Key is the greatest leader NZ has ever had while never ever being able to comment on anything Sky City does because he’s so totally owned by them.

Great, what an improvement. I think I would prefer the original Seven Sharp that just kept people stupid as opposed to turning viewers evil. We demand from TVNZ a watchdog accountability role, because that’s what we expect at 7pm, the powerful to be held to account. Seven Sharp’s bullshit diet of crap that doesn’t matter to dumb down the audience so TVNZ could place advertising that couldn’t fit into the Shortland Street ad schedule ended up being as intellectually offensive as it was  demeaning. Instead of trying something new and clever for the show, TVNZ have just fallen back to right wing talkback hosts to solve the problem. Wonderful.

So we’ll have Paul Henry’s hate mongering on TV3 week nightly and on the ‘public broadcaster’ we will have a bile merchant earlier in the evening week nightly as well. Excellent, just what we need, more talk hate radio knee-jerk broadcasters defending the rich and privileged in an election year on both major TV networks.

The broadcasting landscape in NZ has become as fair and balanced as Fox News. The sooner we get a change of Government that is dedicated to funding public broadcasting seriously, the better. The right are taking over the levers of information to gate keep the debate once again, and without a determined approach from a new Broadcasting Minister, we are doomed to have rich right wing crypto-fascist clowns parroting Business Roundtable fringe economics as the norm.

  1. TV channels are lining up some of the dirtiest filthiest right wing maggots ever to pollute a studio and our airwaves for the purpose of political manipulation. 2014 is the last roll of the dice for this country really, the Key gang goes or this place will assume the status of a nation version of a $2 shop.

I barely watch broadcast tv, and I also never get asked to participate in a landline poll. The demographic that does, or is available for those two things will be treated to smarmy, nasty cat puke on the carpet from Hosking and grinning idiot bullying rear end anal spray from Henry.

We have been warned and there should be surprise studio carpark demos to let these prize pricks know they are not getting off the hook.

  2. If there was ever a political appointment to our nation’s broadcaster this is it.

TVNZ can never again claim to be a fair and impartial commentator.

    Shame on them.

    • Are there any State-funded broadcasters that can claim to be fair and impartial? The BBC springs to mind as particularly biased towards the urban bien pensant liberal mindset

    • Do you not think that TVNZ are pandering to the tub-thumping populists rather than taking a political position?

I would actually like some intelligent political and economic commentary from left and right wing viewpoints, but I see TVNZ falling short across the board

  3. Unbelievable; this will be the shortest journey of Godwin’s Law. Fox News, is what?, as accurate as Comical Ali, panders to their target demographic, Republican retirees in Florida, or re-enforces that NZ Right Wing Conservatives are wringing wets, communists a la Hootten, compared to the nutters in the Tea Party et el.

You think that we will have Glenn Beck clones, maybe very pale imitations, ghosts rather than zombies. Hoskins is in love with his own gravitas and brings little insight, Henry is a clown, both of little intellect. The days of fair and balanced reporting are diminishing with the need for entertainment, to save a dying Medium.

  4. Oh well, guess that’s a new time to allocate cleaning the toilet and the hairclog out of the shower drain as that will be much easier to handle than having to listen to what will inevitably be much harder to swallow on either ONE or 3 at 7pm next year. Not even Toni Street’s sickly smile could make it anymore palatable.

  5. I’m still cracking up at the headline – Hard Right Crypto-Fascist Clown

it conjures up all sorts of weird mental images!

Maybe time for a cartoon competition at TDB

  6. @ Tiger Mountain . I like your idea of a car park protest . Seriously , I do . I’m a strident proponent of direct action .

Hoskings ? Ohhh . That sneer ? It’s as if he’s permanently smelling a stink but then you’d get that if you had your nose stuck that far up jonky . Remember when he replaced ETV ? I loved ETV and God only knows I needed it . Then in came this flouncy little creep and started squeaking and sneering Hate speech , his hair oozing petrochemical bi-products . It was shocking I remember .

How about someone replace his hair gel with Veet ? He’d look like a Naked Mole Rat but without the charm . ( http://youtu.be/eHi9FvUPSdQ ) A sneering stump of skin and bone .

What will he be on then ? A six figure salary ? A tax paid for salary embellished with advertising revenue ? Advertising revenue structured to get even more money out of the tax payer to spend on foreign owned , Bank pimped debt ?

‘ One Step Ahead ‘ ? More so than we might imagine .

Honestly , it’s all about them getting your money . And if you work hard , they also get to cynically waste your time on this Earth for their benefit . Is that thought what we want to have in the back of our minds as we expire ? Yeah ? Nah .

    • In total it says in the Herald between his TV & radio gigs he will be on more than $1million. He is a disgusting greedy sneering revolting human being. I cannot understand how he could hold down this new job given everyone knows he does PR for the national party and thinks Key is the man and is paid to go to Sky city. That is the end of TVNZ for me, and I am coming close to the end of TV3 with that other cretin now being given a show in the late evening.

  7. I heard Hosking editorialise about National Standards in schools. I read it later to make sure I’d heard right.
I don’t know whether Hosking is a ‘Hard right crypto-fascist clown’ but I do know he is thick.
My reading proved I’d heard right. He is patently too thick to understand what National Standards is all about. He is the archetypal cretin that educational experts (including teachers) have to deal with in trying to have intelligence applied to our educational debate. (Granted he has the wit to know that he can spout uninformed, unintelligent drivel and his thick listener supporters will believe him.)

  8. Xox
TVNZ has been rubbish for some time. TV, as a medium, is on the way down, and needs a total makeover if it to be relevant as a quality public broadcaster. And as for these latest comedians…. Glad I don’t watch any more. How many feel the same?

  9. Mike Hosking is the biggest hypocrite. He made a huge fuss about his daughters’ privacy but now his wife writes about the family, weekly, in the Woman’s Day. He talks about the family on air all the time. He wants it both ways. He uses family as ‘content’ but squeals about privacy. I cringe when I hear him (and Katie) write/talk about their blended family as I really wonder how their exes feel about all the pimping out. Their children may not thank them later either.
He denied a relationshipe with Katie for the longest time too. I just read a 2004 Next magazine about Kate. It called Mike her “greatest fan” or some such nonsense and then her husband was “her number 1” and he was gushing about how great she was and how grand their relationship was. Hummmmmm.
I could go on. He gives me the rants.

  10. He gives me the shits! And yes this is the ugly truth about the fascist scum who call the shots in NZ’z media. 2014 is gonna be gross and mean and filthy! Compliments of the season good people.

  11. Hey Bomber, talkback radio is a fantastic medium. It has all the facilities of a blog site (raising issues, inviting a range of comments, and moderating to keep it reasonably friendly). Radios are cheaper to buy than computers, infinitely easier to use, and take no effort to maintain, and “radio connections” have no monthly charge, and no time or traffic limits. It’s accessible to people who lack literacy skills, or even just struggle to sustain reading on screens, or type with more than one finger.

It’s an ongoing tragedy that we have abandoned this low-cost and highly flexible medium to eugenecists like Michael Laws, and bloke-clowns like Willie and JT. What would it take to set up a balanced talk radio station, with commentators who lean towards both liberal and conservative social attitudes, and public and private service provision, and carefully avoid letting discussions turn into polarized verbal mud-wrestling? I, for one, would volunteer to host a show.

    • Agree with you Danyl, radio is underated, and many people listen to it especially at drive times. Would also like to point out it will be the only way to get reliable info in a civil emergency as was the case in the chch earthquake. Recommend everyone has one with newish batteries stored away. Safety first remember.
