Headline: Port Hills review inconsistent and stressful
Gerry Brownlee’s Port Hills zoning review is an inexplicable bombshell for many residents, coming a year late and with little warning, says Labour’s Earthquake Recovery spokesperson Ruth Dyson.
“This decision is inconsistent and stressful for many residents. The Section 124 notices, put on homes because of risk of rock fall, cliff collapse or landslide, should have the same standards as the red zone, which Mr Brownlee says carries the same risk.
“This inconsistency just creates confusion for people who don’t want to lose their homes.
“Even worse some homes are red zoned even though people have been living in them safely for two and a half years.
“The mistakes of last year, when areas that were perfectly safe were red zoned should have been rectified immediately but the residents have had to wait until now.
“Instead, because of some fear of admitting a mistake, the Minister has kept people waiting for 18 months longer than necessary. They deserve an apology and redress for the stress and delay.
“It is ridiculous that Gerry Brownlee is blaming court action for the delays. He could have fixed the issue at any time.
“Many residents will be distressed and angry, with a last minute phone call being their only engagement with CERA. As usual the information on the website is insufficient.
“For some, this is now the chance to move on with their life. Sadly for others, it is the start of a nightmare.
