Headline: Government Turns Back on Doing Business with Iwi

Selling off assets does not build a brighter future but condemns the next generation to stay on the bottom rung, says Labours Maori Development Spokesperson Nanaia Mahuta.

In response to reports that local Iwi , Ngati Whakahemo, has been denied the opportunity to retain lands within its tribal territory Landcorp are now preparing to dispose of lands it currently manages. Those sales will now be open to foreign buyers.

“The Government is always assuring Kiwis that ‘mum and dad’ investors will get a stake in the Mighty River, Meridian and Genesis companies, yet lands sold under Government owned Landcorp will not provide any interest to local iwi.

“This smacks of a double-standard and reinforces the real agenda of the Government to sell off assets quickly for a dime or a dollar to an overseas bidder.

“Now iwi are forced to go to the Waitangi Tribunal to preserve their interest in the sale so as to protect lands in their tribal area.

“The Government has stopped listening and turned its back on keeping Kiwi lands in Kiwi  hands.

“It is time for them to go.”
