This eye opening piece on Al Jazeera last month should be compulsory viewing when it comes to out debate about crime and punishment.

Our insane incarceration rates suggest our peaceful nation is really at war with itself. We refuse to accept colonization has had a crippling impact upon Maori. This country has to wake up to what the ongoing trauma of losing 95% of your land in a century does to a peoples economic base and Mana. Screaming in horror at the present with no knowledge of how it came to pass is blindness.

The prison officers we ask to run this incarceration society are underfunded without the tools to rehabilitate the prisoners or protect themselves and now ACC own a large share in the Private Prison Complex, we have an insidious relationship where a Government Agency is dependent upon revenue streams from incarcerating citizens. Such a misalignment of social philosophy will only serve to exacerbate the institutional racism minus any of the genuine healing society demands of its restorative justice systems.

The only voice challenging this terrible state of affairs is Just Speak, and the sooner they start leading the debate – the better for NZ.

  1. I totally agree! There’s something rotten in the state of Godzone and the sooner it’s purged the better. Roll on October 2014. Next thing we know it’ll be the NZ Police retirement fund buying Springhill Prison.

  2. Amongst the highest incarceration rates in the world for cannabis offences . . . how can we truly believe that a plant with uses in medicine, paper production, fabric, plastics, building, and for use to enhance our lives should be illegal while life-destroying alcohol keeps its monopoly.
We live in a crazy crazy world!
