    Community Action
Against Deep Sea Oil Drilling and Seabed Mining

    11:00am Saturday November 16th
    Manu Bay, Raglan

Tangata Whenua and the wider community of Raglan in conjunction with KASM and Oil Free Seas Flotilla are putting together a community initiated action against planned Deep Sea Oil Drilling and Seabed Mining off the west coast of New Zealand.

The event will take place at the iconic surfing location, Manu Bay Raglan on Saturday the 16th of November from 11am. The event aims to bring together all aspects of the community that have an interest in understanding the dangers of the planned commercial activities of Deep Sea Oil and Seabed Mining.

The organizers wish to extend an invitation to all people who are unsure about the issues of seabed mining and deep sea oil and gas exploration, so that they can gain proper information and facts about the planned activities and the inherent dangers they pose to our marine environment, coastal areas and communities.

We welcome everyone from across the Waikato and NZ to come, join us and support our community this Saturday at the iconic Manu Bay. We need to show the country and the world that these proposals have been forced upon us without proper consultation and information sharing. The risk management planning for an oil spill or blow out is under planned and under resourced and should be of major concern to all New Zealanders whether for or against deep sea oil exploration.

New Zealand’s first Seabed Mining application for a 65 square kilometer area off the coast of Patea in South Taranaki is currently with the Environmental Protection Authority and will begin the four-week public notification and submission period in a weeks’ time.

Texan oil giant Anadarko have a brand new exploratory drill rig en-route from Korea to New Zealand for a summer of Deep Sea Oil exploration starting with the drill site, 111 nautical miles west of Raglan.

Together these issues pose very real threats and coastal communities up and down the west coast are very concerned and mobilizing into action.

Bring your own picnic to this family friendly gathering of people to show your love of the ocean and support the boats taking part in the flotilla action that will commence on Monday the 18th of November 111 nautical miles west of Raglan.

There will be music and spoken word together with information and short presentations from Kaumatua, along with KASM, Greenpeace and Oil Free Seas Flotilla.

With a large turn out expected there will be parking issues so we ask people to ride share, care pool, hitch or walk, (and a note to those people with vans who are able help out with a shuttle service from Raglan town that would be much appreciated)
