MPs’ passport seized in Sri Lanka

Green MP Jan Logie has had her passport returned and is on her way to the airport to take a flight back to New Zealand after being detained by Sri Lankan immigration officials.

However, she has been ordered not to do any interviews with local Sri Lankan media.

Logie had been detained at her Sri Lankan hotel after immigration officials confiscated her passport, the Green Party confirmed, along with the Australian Senator for New South Wales Lee Rhiannon. Both woman are now leaving the country.

They were accused of violating immigration laws, a spokeswoman said. They were on a human rights mission ahead of a Commonwealth leaders’ summit this week.

Four immigration officials shut down a press conference and their seized their passports.

It is a disgrace that one of NZs MPs has been treated in such an appalling manner, when that MP is one of our most respected civil rights voices like Jan Logie, it is disgusting.

It is a sick joke to hold the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in a country that is going to treat one of our elected representatives so poorly and gives a true indication of how abusive their Government must be on their own citizens if they are willing to treat our Politicians with such contempt.

Respects to the Greens for once again forcing human rights to the forefront by putting themselves on the front line.

  1. NZ’s most pathetic PM exposes his leadership ability:

“The view that New Zealand takes, and has taken for a long period of time, is that where we are going to an international event that we’re a party to – that is hosted in a country where we may have concerns about their human rights records – we still go,” he said.

  2. The Sri Lankan Government is as corrupt as they come, with the Prime Minister/President/whatever and his family cut in on every deal that goes ahead in the country….and woe betide anyone who tries to bring that to public attention…….
