Headline: War on teachers crushing morale in schools

Hekia Parata’s war on teachers has resulted in plummeting morale and is stopping our best and brightest from joining this critical profession, Labour’s Education spokesperson Chris Hipkins says.

“A just released report by The New Zealand Initiative notes satisfaction among secondary school teachers has fallen from 70 per cent in 2009 to 57 per cent last year.

“It also notes we are losing talented teachers because Government reforms have ‘exhausted teachers and yielded very little progress’. That is because the opinions of teachers have not been respected and their professional development has been largely ignored.

“This report highlights the damage National is doing to our education system.

“Rather than building on our strengths in the education system, National is importing failed ideological experiments from overseas like charter schools and national testing. Teachers have also been understandably distracted by having to fight for their rightful pay during the Novopay debacle.

“We urgently need to rebuild a relationship of trust between Government and those working in classrooms every day. We need high-quality, committed teachers to lift student achievement.

“There needs to be policies to attract, retain and develop teachers.

“Sadly, that will never happen while Hekia Parata is constantly telling teachers they’re failing Kiwi kids,” Chris Hipkins says.

  1. All education “Reforms” = Further down a Wrong Path.

    This is because,
the Ideology (driving force) behind them is
the Very Same One that has also created Economically the new and destructive trend of Inequality.(=widening gap between rich & poor)

It is the so called “Neo liberal” mindset. Their wrong mindset.
( Unfortunately they are also very powerful, because they happen to be those with lots of $$$$$, thus they become the Decision Makers)

One of their Distinguishing Characteristics is – to play the Blame Game.

    Economically, eg,
They have practically succeeded in convincing an ignorant society that the Poor are so, because of their own choices.(ie it’s their own fault).
(Whilst meanwhile in the background they have been carefully re- engineering, over past 3 decades, Nz’s economy to make the system work in their favour, resulting in deepening inequality.)

    Re EDUCATION –
The same sort of re- engineering has been occurring.
It began, same time. Started with turning schools into like “businesses”..tons of paperwork suddenly, having to resort to “fundraising”…etc etc.. =less quality teaching time.
(Then other changes -ie “curriculum” soon were swept in..)

    >>Declining Literacy & Mathematical standards<< have been the inevitable result.
(These=the Primary & MOST IMPORTANT Subjects that Matter the MOST in life)

Further changes since then made things even worse…But the REAL and original PROBLEM (above) never properly addressed

Now, ( as per the Blame Game) it is …"Teachers fault"..(Right?)
    – WRONG.

Ms Peirata, understand, is just a "puppet". She was perfect for her role..
Perfect to carry out orders, because she is clearly not one to think in depth or pose questions.

These "orders", are NEO LIBERALIST. It's a particular mindset.
It is important to also understand that they extend from BEYOND just NZ Govt.
If you look at general trends , you will find out that the same thing has been afflicting Education, & Teachers also in USA, and UK..

You will discover that there is an overall trend..

Try to figure out why it might be desirable to create a "dumbed down" strata of population.

(Making Teachers the current scapegoat, is just a convenient distraction)
