Headline: Cubs and Brownies in charge of biosecurity
Catching white butterflies might be great school holiday fun for the kids but should not be part of our frontline biosecurity response, Labour’s Biosecurity spokesperson Damien O’Connor says.
“Kids in the Nelson-Tasman region are being paid $10 by the Department of Conservation for every dead giant white butterfly they capture and kill.
“Turning kids into biosecurity officers is hardly a scientific strategy. It’s like putting Cubs and Brownies in charge of biosecurity.
“It is a joke.
“New Zealand used to have a world-class biosecurity regime. Budget and staff cuts mean we are now relying on children running around with butterfly nets.
“The under-resourced Ministry for Primary Industries has had to rely on the Department of Conservation, which has in turn called out the local kids.
“Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy should moth ball this ‘policy’, Damien O’Connor says.
