We don’t let none of them ‘gays’ in here….

I had the interesting experience of going to a local church this morning (first time in 13 years!) to listen to Brendan Malone from the Catholic organisation Family Life International. More on him later this week.

It was bad. It was really really bad.

Before he spoke, we endured a Bible reading that I remember reduced me to tears many years ago when I knew I was bi and was in the church band, feeling increasingly insecure about me and God.

Roman’s chapter 1:

God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die.

I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy. Are you? Yeah, nah.

But the GLBTI bashing wasn’t over yet.

During Mr Malone’s sermon, he had this to say about trans people – an analogy he had made in conversation with a ‘relativist feminist philosopher’:
“So if a boy thinks he’s a girl, people tell him he’s a girl, and he wants to be a girl, does that make him a girl?! And if a girl thinks she’s a boy (etc….) does that make her a boy?! That’s crazy! That’s like saying that if a boy thinks he’s a chicken, his friends think he should be a chicken and he wants to be a chicken, that he’s a chicken!! Never heard anything so ridiculous!”
Is he kidding me? He wants to compare the hell trans people go through for recognition and to be themselves to a CHICKEN?! What I had for tea?!
Yet the same sermon was also peppered with the plea that Christians need to get back out into our communities and share God’s LOVE and KINDNESS!!!

Two words to that church and that man:

Epic. Fail.

  1. Exactly what one would expect from such an organisation. They tend to think they have the monopoly on *love and *forgiveness and other such Christian values. It’s hard trying to live with 15th century values in the 21st. As a non-religious person, I practice *compassion towards such types!

  2. Brendan Malone makes baby Jesus cry. Brendan just points the finger of blame at victims of society, he does the devil’s work. Most of the time he focuses on abortions and thinks he’s helping prevent them. But by not fixing social problems, such as creating equality, Brendan creates more abortions than he prevents because he stimulates social stigma.
Yes, just by being a judgmental and selfish arse, Brendan creates abortions. If Brendan really wanted to prevent abortions he would stop talking about them and put all his focus into creating more economic security and gender equality…but he won’t, because he enjoys what he does, he creates the problem then plays the hero

  3. I was raised Catholic but gave it up the second I stopped being forced to go to church and sunday school.
It’s so obviously a farce and its leaders so obviously corrupt that I often wonder how seemingly intelligent people can believe its drivel.
And then idiots like Brendan Malone representing church groups pop up with utter ignorance like the above and I wonder how even stupid people can believe in organised religion……………….

  4. Silly old bugger . He’s just in denial . Send him a hug . Seriously , he’ll love you for it bye and bye .

  5. Hi Rachel,

    A couple of important points:

    1. I do NOT work for Family Life International. I used to, but I haven’t worked for them for several years now.

    2. You really shouldn’t put quotation marks around statements that are NOT even close to being direct statements from the person you are supposedly quoting.

You have totally misquoted me here regarding the male/female/chicken story, but then I guess you know that already, because you were there when I recounted that incident, so you’d know that the version you have here is not even close to what I actually said, or the point I was making about objectivity versus subjectivity when it comes to truth.

You’ve falsely claimed here that I was talking about transgender persons, and that this was a conversation with a feminist philosopher when I never actually said any of that – you’ve simply embellished for ideological effect after the fact.
