A brief word on the bloody America’s Cup

Please Baby Jesus, end the America’s Cup soon so I can stop pretending to care about a taxpayer funded billionaires boat race with questionable economic returns. 800 000 NZers living in poverty deserve our attention, not the toys of the rich.

Let’s be honest and rename America’s Cup ‘The Hunger Games’. Who knew a pair of red bloody socks could blind and distract us to so much.

Bread & circuses minus the bread.

  1. Hear Hear Martyn. Absolutely agree with your sentiments.

In this household, we have had a gutsful of the thing. We have stopped listening to and watching the news, because the headlines are all about Team NZ and the AC! Subliminal manipulation of the masses for sure!

I bet Key and his motley mob of miscreants in parliament will be loving this, diverting Kiwis’ attention away from the rapidly imploding economy, as well as the rapid decline in society in general, as people become more and more impoverished, through unjust policies!

  2. They are now playing for the airtime and the “gate”.
Effing sickening and as corrupt as the rich pricks who fund it.
I hate it with a passion.

  3. It’s amazing to behold the masses being robbed and loving it, clapping and cheering when ETNZ has the winning advantage. Effectively, a one boat race. Nekminit… Apologists will be prepared. NZ has already had the profit from this charade they will say.. The nation can afford $36 million for yachting, but nothing fora quality commercial free public TV Channel ($16million). Disgraceful. NZ government has been taken over by corporate interests. Let alone feeding the poor.

  4. I have to say – as a relative newbie to these shores from Europe-Land – the level of antipathy most of the rest of the world views these rich boys on their yachts is not to be underestimated. I am continually surprised that so many people are watching it.

    • Yep, NZ likes to think “the world is watching”, but it’s totally not. This event is getting near zero (or literally zero) coverage in every other country but NZ and the US (and the US coverage is not remotely front page news, like it is here – more of a curiosity). It’s all kinda sad really, especially when you know how much it all cost us. This thing is a total waste of money. If Oracle wins, at least NZ will (hopefully) stop throwing good money after bad, and Oracle can race this thing all by themselves (given the paltry number of challengers this time, I doubt anyone bothers to show up at all in four years).

  5. hahaha and they lost AGAIN today

Will they be made to refund the millions their mates (Tory skum) the GUBBERMINT have shelled out of our $???

    Tosers
THAT money paid to these tory corporate welfare fuktards could and should have been spent on the PEOPLE

  6. Some very advanced technology has been developed and refined for the America’s Cup boats. Wing sails, laminates, and hydrofoils could all be used for future transport solutions once oil becomes scarce.

I think it is a better allocation of funds than the mountain of cash poured in to the Rugby Cup which did absolutely nothing to benefit the future of mankind.

  7. I don’t even pretend to care about it. Sure shuts people up when they mention it and I reply that I couldn’t give a rats arse! But I do love seeing all those national supporters wearing red.

    • @ Crone – love it. Your response re watching the AC is the same as mine is. The moronic, vague looks I get is quite funny really. Ha ha, Gnat supporters wearing red socks. Priceless. If only they could see themselves!

  8. It’s over and done with now thank goodness. Hopefully we will be given the opportunity to have some real news reporting for a change, instead of the brainwashing crap dished up via the America’s Cup, to distract the masses from important issues! Can’t believe how gullible some Kiwis are!

However, given the mainstream media’s penchant for promoting Key and his Gnat gits, what we will be privileged to read will undoubtedly have the usual right wing slant to it! But that’s OK, because I know I can always get a good concise alternative perspective from TDB.
