The Government’s attempt to delay the start date to 2020 would limit our public transport for the next 13 years and cost us $100 million per year.

Aucklanders are united in the need for construction of the City Rail Link to begin in 2015, Green Party transport spokesperson Julie Anne Genter said today.

Julie Anne Genter is hosting a rally of Auckland leaders and members of the public today at Britomart at 3:30pm to call on the Government to commit funding to begin building of the City Rail Link (CRL) by 2015. That would allow the CRL to open in 2021. Auckland Council documents have recently revealed that each year of delay in opening the CRL beyond 2021 will cost $100 million.

The National Government recently dropped its opposition to the CRL being built but has currently committed no funding and plans to delay the beginning of construction until 2020, pushing out the opening date to 2026.

“Auckland needs the City Rail link completed as soon as possible. It will ease every day congestion and also enable the city to grow in a way that is liveable, vibrant and less dependent on fossil fuels,” said Ms Genter.

“The Government’s attempt to delay the start date to 2020 would limit our public transport for the next 13 years and cost us $100 million per year.

“New Zealand is on the verge of winning back the America’s Cup. We also need the CRL to support major events, as well as giving Aucklanders a smarter and greener transport network that works better every day.

“The City Rail Link will be the heart of a congestion-free network of electric trains, busways, ferries and cycling infrastructure.

“Aucklanders are united: it’s time to get the City Rail Link built and get Auckland moving,” said Ms Genter.
