Headline: Support parties can’t sell out over RMA
While it is pleasing to see the Maori Party and United Future get on board with opposition to National’s plans for the RMA, they need to stick to their guns and not be swayed by weak Government concessions, says Maryan Street, Labour’s Environment Spokesperson.
“Labour has said publicly that we do not oppose getting greater efficiencies out of RMA processes. If it means a DIY-er is paying less for a consent to build a deck, then well and good.
“But we have also said the RMA must not be turned into an economic development Act.
“We do not support nationally imposed regulations that erode local decision-making and reduce public participation and will repeal any changes which undermine or weaken environmental protections.
“Labour would welcome a conversation with the Maori Party and United Future before they get into negotiations with the government, who will offer them anything to get this legislation through.
“As Peter Dunne has noted previously, if there’s a willing buyer, he’s a willing seller. That can’t happen when the environment is at risk.”
