Headline: Govt fails deaf over family violence DVD

“Under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Government has a responsibility to ensure that all public funding provided for public communications is in an accessible format. This includes captions.

The lack of captioning for a recently released DVD dealing with the issue of family violence is a serious omission that needs to be rectified as soon as possible, the Green Party said today.

The powerful DVD titled Enough is Enough is a 24-minute documentary in memory of Patricia Ann McGrath, who was killed by an act of violence in January.

“Family violence is an issue that affects everyone, including deaf and hearing impaired communities,” Green Party disability spokesperson Mojo Mathers said today.

“It is very disappointing that those responsible did not ensure that a DVD covering such an important health and safety issue was captioned.

“The DVD project was funded by New Zealand Police, the Ministry of Social Development, the It’s Not OK campaign and the Northland District Health Board.

“Given the Office for Disability issues also sits within the Ministry of Social Development. I think this oversight is even more disappointing,” Ms Mathers said.
