Headline: Simple solution: EQC must send in the professionals
Gerry Brownlee must clean up the mess caused by unqualified investigators who may have incorrectly assessed flooring levels in earthquake-damaged Christchurch homes, says Labour’s Earthquake Commission spokesperson Clayton Cosgrove.
“If unqualified assessors have done a shoddy job of investigating the damage to flooring levels caused by the earthquake, then that is completely unacceptable. Gerry Brownlee should have made sure this was done right the first time.
“There are allegations that property sales are falling over because of this. That’s another kick in the guts for Cantabrians who have been trying to move on for close to three years.
“Confidence is the key to the recovery. We can’t have a situation where home owners and potential buyers are constantly questioning the quality of flooring levels assessment.
“The solution is simple. EQC has the files. If there’s a legitimate complaint raised about flooring levels not being measured appropriately, EQC should immediately send a suitably qualified professional around to reassess the levels.
“If it was done wrong the first time then the claim should be amended. Then it can be fixed. That restores confidence. Gerry Brownlee can make this happen now.
“What do people want? They want a faster recovery. They want real solutions. It’s time to get things moving. People have been battling with EQC for almost three years. We can’t afford another delay.
“EQC needs to put some energy into this. The solution is simple and easily fixed.
“In respect of Wellington and Marlborough it must be done right first up. Damaged properties must be assessed by suitably qualified professionals.
“Get it right the first time,” says Clayton Cosgrove.
