Paula Bennett needs to front up on cuts to WINZ staffing numbers, the Green Party said today
“Welfare reforms under National are at the heart of increased workloads for WINZ staff. If her Ministry decides to cut costs by removing staff in this environment Bennett should be willing to front up on the issue, said Green Party state services spokesperson Denise Roche.
“It is not good enough for her to hide behind her Ministry.
“She needs to be clear on what the cuts are, who is affected and why the unions weren’t adequately consulted.
“We need to have a fully resourced welfare response in place so that staff are not facing undue pressure given the workloads created by the reforms, and so that people seeking assistance are dealt with effectively, fairly and with compassion, “said Ms Roche.
“These cuts are part of a wider agenda. This term we have seen a relentless undermining of the welfare system and its ability to provide support for people in need. We have also seen the roll-out of the privatisation of welfare services which will ultimately lead to services being run for profit rather than to help people who need it.”
