In the lead up to the mass demonstrations that will occur around NZ this Saturday at 2pm, I want to explain why certain groups in NZ should be marching, today it is environmentalists.

If you are a environmentalist, if you are a member of the Green Party, if you are a member of Greenpeace, if you have ever signed any petition that has any environmental cause – you should most certainly be marching this Saturday at 2pm.

The changing definitions to include economic well being means every environmentalist who threatens the economic well being of a corporate polluter will now be a target.

We have seen this Governments cowering acquiescence and subservience to the Big Oil industry with Simon Bridges writing legislation to criminalize Greenpeace by removing their ability to protest meaningfully. What is most chilling about National’s anti-protest at sea laws however is that they have crossed the demarcation line between foreign threat and domestic targets by allowing the NZ Military to be used against its own population by being the agency that can arrest protesters.

National are best friends with Big Oil and have shown a total lack of spine when dealing with them, so these new GCSB spy laws would be turned against environmentalists the very second any environmentalist threatened a protest which the polluter can argue hurts their economic well being.

Most insidious is that the law allow for entire categories of people to be trawled for metadata, that means everyone who is a Greenpeace member can all be targeted.

We must not allow any Government to ever have this level of power and control over their population.

If you are Green – you need to be on the march, this Saturday because you are on the target list for these laws.

PS – Don’t forget this Thursday in Auckland the urgent public debate on the GCSB laws with Kim Dotcom, Dame Anne Salmond, Dr Rodney Harrison and Thomas Beagle.
