What’s the point being first at 5.30pm?

Prime News is showing why hollowed out news filled with overseas content is so awful – a major earthquake in our capital and no coverage?

All they had was the acknowledgment that the capital had been hit by a 6.5 magnitude shake, and then on with a bunch of overseas news stories.

What’s the point in being first if you don’t have the news resources to actually do anything beyond getting the grad student with the communications degree to push play on the pre-loaded news stories?

Prime had this problem last year at the Labour Party conference when Barry Soaper’s pre-record that nothing of interest was going to happen at the conference was embarrassingly turned on its head when the membership voted to make the Party more democratic and Gower manufactured a Cunliffe leadership coup.

Prime News at 5.30pm sold themselves and their audience short.

  1. I knew there was a reason I never watch Prime News…

At 5.30, I’m listening to Radio NZ’s “Checkpoint”. There’s more news in five minutes of Checkpoint than 30 minutes of Prime TV News.

In fact, I wonder why Prime even bothers? They’d get more interest if they re-broadcast “Friends” for the umpteenth time… Or even just static.
