Headline: City Rail Link should be built as soon as possible

The earlier we get the CRL built, the cheaper construction will be and the quicker Aucklanders will be able to enjoy its benefits.

The announcement that the first section of the City Rail Link will be built as early as 2016 revives the case for getting the CRL completed as soon as possible, Green Party transport spokesperson Julie Anne Genter said today.

The Green Party welcomed today’s announcement that the first section of the City Rail Link will be built as early 2016 to allow redevelopment of the land above it. However, under the National Government’s plan, tunnelling would then stop for three to four more years until it gets around to building the rest of the CRL from 2020. The Green Party, the Auckland Council, transport groups, and business are calling for the CRL to be completed much quicker than the National Government’s timeframe.

“It’s great news that the first section of the City Rail Link could be built as soon as 2016, the question now is why doesn’t National get on board and build the rest of it at the same time?,” said Ms Genter.

“National needs to stop putting the brakes on Auckland transport. On National’s schedule, we will have to wait through another decade of clogged roads until the CRL is complete.

“There’s no reason to keep Aucklanders waiting. Since tunnelling for the CRL will start as early as 2016 anyway, it makes sense for the whole project to be completed earlier.

“The earlier we get the CRL built, the cheaper construction will be and the quicker Aucklanders will be able to enjoy its benefits.

“The CRL will carry the equivalent of 12 motorway lanes of commuters into Auckland’s CBD freeing up our clogged roads and promoting development along rail corridors. That should be the priority ahead of motorway projects that won’t reduce congestion.

“It just needs a government with the political will to get the work done. The Greens are committed to making it happen, said Ms Genter.
