I know we barely have time in NZ to do anything other than love John Key and gossip about X Factor (personally I’m surprised John Key hasn’t been asked to be a guest judge) but perhaps now PRISM has been leaked overseas, we might pause in our adoration of Mr Key to ask some serious questions about our slide into a neo Police state.
There are plenty of ignorant knuckle draggers who claim that ‘if we have nothing to hide we have nothing to fear’, but they are traitors to liberty and brain dead ZB listening zombies who need to be excluded from the debate with the sort of ruthlessness one uses when dealing with cancer.
I don’t care why or how Peter Dunne released the information that showed the GCSB has been illegally spying on NZers, I only care that it’s been released. Now it has, and with the new knowledge of Prism, I beg my fellow citizens to demand John Key and Winston Peters do not pass the new GCSB legislation that will make legal the ability for them to spy on all of us all the time.
This is the 21st century Stasi, this is the neo Police State where we are all criminals, where we are all under surveillance, where we have no privacy and an Orwellian Big Brother keeps a lidless eye over us all.
1984 is now.
I have been surprised by the spinelessness of my fellow citizens in their bizarre love affair with the multi-millionaire trader who sells vacant aspiration and empty optimism. I’ve been surprised that there hasn’t been more of a fight as Key and his government throw the weakest into the mincer of welfare reform and has sold off our assets to the richest NZers but surely even sleepy hobbits won’t hand over to the Government the Eye of Mordor?
Surely?
For a nation that screamed Nanny State over the closing of a legal loophole to stop parents using the defense of discipline when caught bashing their kids, we are incredulously quiet on these vast powers.
What Key and Peters will pass into law for the GCSB is Nanny State on a meth bender with a submachine gun.
Emma Goldman was right, the slope we slip down with social democracy leads us all to some sort of authoritarian state. Be that a communist-fascist state or fascist-communist state – we are heading there. Fear is the mind killer, and we have let fear rule for a very long time.

I hold no expectation that Key’s government will peel back SIS and GCSB powers to watch all citizens, all the time.
Better to seek concrete pledges from opposition parties, now, to do so upon the inevitable change in government.
And that, folks, is the nub of it.
Will a new Labour-Green-Mana(-NZ First?) government wind back the oppressive legislation that is;
* Terrorism Supression Act 2002
* Search & Surveillance Act 2012
* Government Communications Security Bureau and Related Legislation Amendment Bill/Act (this is the legislative change to allow the GCSB to spy on New Zealanders.)
It really is time to roll back the power of the State. Because one thing is for certain; the police and spy agencies will not be satisfied.
They will want more.
Interesting that while the US and UK is having a heated debate about surveillance of citizens, here in NZ the government is blithely passing a GSCB bill to make such spying legal. Unbelievable!
I have long believed that there are two main types of secret intelligence structures; one is like the Stazi- all-pervading, contains a large percentage of society, and because most citizens understand and recognise it exists, people protect themselves against it, work with it and subvert it when they can and want to. The other model is the SIS/GSCB in the UK or here -it’s traditionally small but strongly targeted against certain threats, the citizenry doesn’t have a recognition of it, most people scoff at the idea they could be accidentally or inadvertently surveilled by it. This model has worked best for the West (out of wartime, that is) for decades but what PM JK’s new bill does is move NZ over into the bloated, Stazi-style system, which is hideously expensive, scatter-gun approach and ultimately contains the seeds of its own failure.
Feels like Orwell & Huxley in synch to me tonight… Huxley’s predictive theories of our self somad technology facilitating the incrementally Orwellian world we have already been introduced to.
With 2001 as the template reason for it. Even as TV1 late news here in 2013 doesnt even cover the GCSB Key or Prism tonight?..

Well John Keys has NEVER had the interests of THE PEOPLE in his mind.
He’s a puppet for the New World Order. I repeat: John Keys is NOT leader for NZers. He’s been bought, and put in place. That’s why nobody hardly knew how/ why he sprang up to be PM. Just like in Australia, they’ve got that awful woman who nobody heard of…and suddenly she’s PM there. SAME PROBLEM…they both are acting against the interest of the people. An agenda to fulfill. The NWO agenda. Frigging WAKE UP!!!!!!! Totalitarian Rule is coming.
OH and FORGET about “voting” for “change” . An Agenda is in place. Even if you vote for Labour..this agenda will STILL take place. WAKE UP!!
