Headline: Government further exploits ChCh education
The Government’s secret plan for its Christchurch year 1 to 13 super school to be privately funded is further proof that it is taking advantage of the Earthquakes to push through its agenda to privatise and undermine public education, the Green Party says.
The Herald reported today that Education Minister Hekia Parata wants to aspects of the building and management of the new Aranui super school out to private tender. This was apparently news to the current Aranui schools which told the Herald that would be against the spirit of their community.
“It is disgusting for the Government to use a broken and battered community to push through its privatising agenda,” Green Party associate education spokesperson Catherine Delahunty said.
“Putting these vulnerable communities at the mercy of businesses seeking to make a profit from their kids’ education is just wrong.
“Like the case with Charter Schools, evidence shows that when these PPP schools fail and close, it is the kids and the communities that suffer.
“Revelations about the PPP plans for Christchurch follow Ms Parata’s refusal last week to rule out letting charter schools occupy the sites of state schools she has closed under her so called Renewal Plan.
“Christchurch children need stability and calm, they do not need to be experimented on, or exploited by the National Government,” Ms Delahunty said.
