Headline: Key must front on NSA info

“The public of New Zealand need an assurance from the Key Government that it has not been availing itself of information that breaches New Zealanders privacy,” Dr Norman said today.

The Government must tell the public if it has access to information about New Zealanders it may have received from the United States’ National Security Agency, Green Party Co-leader Dr Russel Norman said today.

The United States National Security Agency (NSA) has been collecting information through Apple, Facebook and Google using Prism, a top-secret system that collects emails, documents, photos and other material for agents to review. Some of this information has been given to countries within the Five Eyes intelligence network that includes the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

“The public of New Zealand need an assurance from the Key Government that it has not been availing itself of information that breaches New Zealanders privacy,” Dr Norman said today.

“New Zealand is part of the Five Eyes intelligence network that regularly exchanges information with, among others, the United States.

“New Zealanders need to know if this co-operation with the United States extends to New Zealanders privacy being breached by the National Security Agency.

“Given our own Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) was found recently to have acted outside the law in spying on New Zealanders and New Zealand residents it seems well within the bounds of probability it would gratefully accept anything the National Security agency would hand it,” Dr Norman said.

“The Key Government needs to tighten up its oversight of our intelligence services and the way they operate.

“The Prime Minister has been missing in action as the Minister responsible for the Security Intelligence Services and the GCSB.

“Instead of ramming through legislation, as it is now doing, to allow the GCSB to spy on all New Zealanders, the Key Government should make the intelligence services more accountable.

“A good first step is to bring all New Zealand’s intelligence services within the scrutiny of the of Parliament’s select committee system by making the Intelligence and Security Committee a regular committee of Parliament with powers to examine the activities of the spy agencies,” Dr Norman said.
