Don’t blame MMP for Aaron Gilmore

mmp-posterOther than being an incredibly convenient diversion from media scrutiny over the vast erosion of civil liberties the new GCSB laws represent, Aaron Gilmore has become the favourite malignant symptom of that most corrupt of political systems – MMP!

A large chunk of older white males seem to consider MMP as the druggie boyfriend their daughter has brought home and who now bludges off her. The resentment older well to do pakeha seem to hold for MMP seems to me to be more of a cultural neurosis then legitimate complaint against the quality of democracy MMP affords us.

In the good old days Parliament was overwhelmingly white, straight, old, rich men. As society has cosmopolitanized and demanded better democratic representation, the old boys feel threatened about having to share power. This fear becomes anger which becomes a neurotic resentment directed at MMP.

Every weakness of the system gets held up as the worst crime against democracy and just further proof of how the magic of MMP allows bludgers to bludge.

This is of course nonsense. The only structure that should be blamed for a waste of political foreskin like Aaron Gilmore is the National Party selection committee that put such a hopeless candidate on their list in the first place. For Key and other National Party members to gnash their teeth and cry to the sky ‘what is to be done about this terrible MMP’ misses the point that it was them who put Gilmore there.

We’ve already allowed National to use Gilmore to overshadow real media attention on the GCSB spying laws, let’s not also allow them to use him as the sacrificial lamb on the alter of watering down MMPs representative powers.

Rich, white, straight, old men have already had a good week with the mugging of a public asset for their benefit, let’s not lighten their weekend with fantasies of making our electoral system less democratic.

  1. Are they still disgruntled over last election’s referendum result? Key favoured Supplementary Member, the same system used in Russia. With him being so dictatorial, it’s rather fitting he prefers the same voting system that elects Putin. Wonder how long before this country’s elections are rigged? Given how wonderfully everything’s progressing.

    • Wonder? We don’t do out and out corruption here, were to proper. No we discourage them from voting – make them feel as if voting would be bad and or pointless. Lie over and over about who is good for you, then back this by belittling cultures and peoples identity. Rub in some subtle disfranchisement of the young and poo-poo the elderly for voting for Winston. We don’t do open corruption and vote rigging here – No we don’t need to.

  2. It doesn’t matter what way the voting system is organised someone will always find a way of exploiting it

  3. I think John Key was saying MMP is responsible
The answer is to only vote for the National
candidate and vote for the other parties
    with the second vote
    That would surely please him

    • That’s brilliant. From now on, I’m going to promote this aggressive response to the horrors of MMP to anyone sufficiently ignorant of how it actually works. Mr Key hates MMP, so he’d prefer you to vote National only for electoral candidates – awesome.
