Indeed, we should not forget the sacrifice our friends, families and forebears have made that has resulted in the world being configured politically and socially as it is today. We pray that what we have is the best possible outcome of those previous efforts.
But your illustration also reminds us that a part of that ‘sacrifice’ has entailed imperial powers and their commercial interests taking by force the lands and resources of peoples who did not have the speaking sticks and cold steel of the invaders, and who could offer scant resistance to these inexcusable acts of aggression.
So we shall indeed ‘remember’ today, and hope that we do not ever again see the need to impose our will on any other people by force or by the subterfuge of treaties, trade agreements or bad law.
