Marriage Equality celebration

It is an irony that such an emotional and wondrous day in Parliament when marriage equality passed was the same day when the Government progressed law to allow the military to arrest protesters and effectively criminalize Greenpeace.

But let’s take our wins where we can.

Twitter has increasingly made these types of events a true online experience where virtual spectators can join in and participate.

Here was how marriage equality went down via my twitter feed.

That is imo exactly the wrong way to look at it. I’m just going to say what I said in another entry again. As much as I support this marriage equality legislation, the manner in which it was passed is wholly undemocratic. Indeed, I would argue that it “isn’t worth it”. The fact that our Government seems to pass super unpopular policy regardless of public opinion (and no poll shows any majority support for this bill whatsoever) is highly destructive to democratic ideals. This bill should NOT have been allowed to pass, because their was absolutely ZERO mandate for it, was not campaigned for, or debated in public. Before you jump on me, think about the other pieces (and the next piece) of legislation this Government has (and will) pass with effectively zero democratic scrutiny.
