Scary stuff yeshe. Monsanto have lobbied hard for decades to get what they want at the expense of the environment and public health. Its frightening how successful they have been. The question you raise about Monsanto’s influence in light of the TPPA is relevant to local efforts to prevent the release of G.E material. For example, recently the Whangerei District Council voted to stand by GE Free Northland’s bid for a ban on the introduction of GMO organisms, which brings Northland one step closer to becoming a true GE region.
“The working party found national legislation on GMO’s to be inadequate in regard to liability and the precautionary principle”, hence a move towards strengthening the protection of the area. http://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/local-news/northland/bay-chronicle/8448819/GM-stance-praised
However will these efforts to protect the environment come to nothing when the TPPA is a done deal?
Hi Rosie .. yes, this is my biggest fear of all from Key’s destruction of New Zealand … will Monsanto be able to sue if Whangarei District Council and hopefully others maintain their non-GMO stance? Will Key et al simply submit to this ? Come in Professor Jane Kelsey; we need you more than ever !!
and here is more of distress and opposition to it in USA .. snuck in another bill …
“Will Key et al simply submit to this?” My money is on “Yes”. Unfortunately Key hasn’t been able to demonstrate a commitment to environmental guardianship. His commitment is to short term gain at any cost never mind that being a GE Free nation would contribute to the (albeit mythical) 100% pure NZ brand. We can only hope that our fears aren’t realised. That sounds weak and defeatist but the track record of our govt doesn’t fill me with great hope. Mind you, what would a Labour led govt do? Would they stand with the people or would they stand with big agri business?
Thanks too, for the link below:-)
Monsanto. The untouchable high king of corporate evil.
Here’s more detail … and please, maybe Professor Jane Kelsey can explain what further horrors this might bring to NZ via TPPA ?
